I'm assuming you are referring to the disproportionate depreciation between Japanese bikes and Harleys.
First thing that comes to mind is that though Jap bikes ride and perform well, they are made of plastic and pot metal ,Harleys are made of steel, chromoly and billet aluminum. What this means is that the material the bike is made of lasts way longer.
Next is that each year that passes it becomes harder to find parts for Japanese bikes, each year that passes it becomes easier to find parts for a Harley. It makes it easy to own an old Harley and a pain to own an old Jap bike.
Another reason is ( Like electronics) Jap bikes are obsolete and out dated due to the latest technology within a couple of years ,while Harley remains pretty constant , not getting caught up in the latest gadget or hot set up.
Most guys I know will not sell their old Harleys, they will keep them and still get their new bike too. I know there are used Harleys for sale ,but no where near the quantities of Jap bikes.
I could probably go on ,but I'm out of time, in short Harleys are "Keepers" and most Jap bikes are sort of disposable.

Motorcycles Values

If something is easy to come by, then why would anyone pay top dollar for a used one? They don't. When you buy a used bike, you buy all of the problems that the other guy got rid of, when he sold it. There may be some hidden problem that you wouldn't discover till it's too late. Why would you pay $13K for a used bike, when for a few thousand more, get a new one.
Everyone talks bad about Harley's, but you see Harley's that have been around for a long time. There are so many things that you can do to it to "make it your own", and since the value remains pretty constant, people don't usually get rid of them.
And, when you consider that a new Gold wing costs over $20,000, then a Harley isn't that high of a price any longer. Don't you agree?

All bikes and cars loose value untill they reach a certain age and the stars align. It is a % thing. But say you buy a honda shadow 1998. Now it is worth about 3-4 grand. I could have bought one new at the time for 5500.00. Not a bad loss.
However I could have bought a Harley for 15000 and today sold it for 8-9 grand. It is all relative.
The technology of the new bikes always surpass the old ones.
PS. It doesnt matter what you have transpertation wise, it is not a asset as a house or property would be.
PSS Did you know the Honda gold wings and shadows are all USA and made in the USA. Harley......They used to be.
Not Anymore. Sad day when a non-USA uses all USA parts and an American Icon uses most non-USA parts.

Harleys are a limited production motorcycle. This is how they got out of bankrupcey in the 80's. Instead of making as many bikes as they can sell they limit the numbers produced and it creates more demand. Rolex does the same thing. They charge higher prices not because of the quality as mentioned above, rather because of the exclusivity of it. That has also left room for other manufactures to produces similar bikes and still survive. Some of them being Victory motorcycle, custom made choppers, Jap bikes that look like Harley's. Other than the custom made choppers, all of the other bikes are produced to meet the demand for them.

The harley is still incredibly overpriced. The gold wing comes with an 1800 cc soch 130 hp flat six engine, a radio and sound system, a navigation system, and a heater. The harley comes with a 75 hp 1600cc v-twin that vibrates like a paint mixer... thats it. And harley resale value is getting worse by the day as they become easier to find.

All vehicles loose value the instant you take them away from the dealer, Japanese, German or American. When people want to buy a vehicle, they want the best they can get. They figure a used car, truck or motorcycle just might be somebody else's problems, and they won't pay new prices for something they might have to fix.

Everything decreases in value after you drive it off the dealer lot. it just so happens that used Hondas in good shape are easy to come by.

because the people that buy the jap bikes are smart. We won't be fooled into paying 2007 prices for 1901 junk. We buy to ride not pose. We don't get suckered into buying a image. Why can't people giveaway their vrods?
