What do you think of the new law in South Africa to supply safe sex protection (condoms) and preganacy protection (like the pill and others) to kids from the age of 12 "without parental consent" in all State Clinics?

i do not think it should be allowed myself.........in one way because i think 12 years old is to young to be having sexual relations, and if they did i think the parents should know about it...........i do not want anyone to get pregnant at 12 they are not ready to be mothers.......i had a child at 17 and if it had not been for my mother i would of never learned how to care for this child...........i do not think they should be allowed to do this at all and especially without parental consent.

Your sex wasn't ''safe'. No sex is safe from pregnancy unless one of you is irreversibly sterilized. No sex is safe from disease unless you both have never had sex before. Using a condom can make it safer, but don't get started thinking it is safe. At 15, you are way too young to be making the decision to have sex with all the risk that comes along with it. Your worrying about this is an example of that. If you are worrying now before you even miss your period, it shows you really aren't okay with the repercussions of sex. Your symptoms are indicative of eating too much junk food for Christmas and an upcoming period. But you could be pregnant. Condoms have a typical effectiveness of 82-90% It is nice to wait until marriage or at least engagement for sex as at that point, you would be more mature and committed and can really enjoy the sex and bonding without it adding the stress and complications that it causes as a teen where you don't really want either the bonding or the procreative aspects of it.

I think it is an incredibly insightful, wise, and practical decision. It is certainly a bad thing that 12-year-old children are having sex, but guess what? 12-year-old children *are* having sex, whether voluntarily or otherwise.

I think some better questions to ask would be: What do you think of a country with a population of 43 million people, of whom 5.3 million (more than 1 in 10) have HIV or AIDS? What do you think of a 6.1% infant mortality rate (compared to the US's 0.6%)? What do you think of a country where the average life span is 42.5 years as opposed to the USA's 78 years, and a country where almost a third of the population is under the age of 14? Or where an estimated 25.1% of the adult population has HIV/AIDS?

I think they should be giving out birth control like candy, and they should be teaching sex education right along with reading, writing, and coloring. If for nothing else, children deserve to understand why 1/4 of the adult population are dying so they aren't doomed to have the same fate.

I am torn. While I believe that we all have to make sure that safe sex practices are readily available around the world, I have a big problem with any country that provides medication to minors without parental consent. All medications/devices (even birth control pills and IUDs) have side effects. What is the first thing a doctor asks in an emergency situation? The answer is are they on medications? Also a parent has a right to talk to their children about their beliefs when it comes to birth control, whether they are pro or against.

Well, even though it is wrong for 12 year olds to be having sex and that giving them condoms and birth control pills seems like it would encourage their sexual behavior, they have to stop STD's and more babies so it is a good idea. As for the parental consent part, are the parents going to be giving out condoms and birth control to their kids? No. So, they government has to do it.

It is sad, but in the state that South Africa is in now, it is the poor children's best hope, especially if she is female for survival to talk the man that is about to rape, because men know they can't get AIDS from a virgin (but don't know they may already be carrying the disease and pass it on) and best chance for the girl not to get pregnant from the rape (hopefully, she can get him to use the condom to protect her from disease, at least with the pills, best case scenario, she won't get pregant from the rape. It is a HUGE problem in South Africa.

Another cultural problem is the culture in that area is that a woman should be "dry" to penetration, as that makes her more "pure" and it is a sin and abomination for the girl/woman to be "wet" as would be with a normal sexual arousal.

Prostitutes in the country even use cleaning fluids, newspapers and anything else the can find to become "dry" before the even occurs, so they are deemed "worthy" of payment, which, unfortunately, leads to the statistical likelihood that their private areas would become abraised and more likely to infection.

Since 12 year old girls that have reached sexual maturity are just as vulnerable to STDs and are just as likely to get pregnant, condoms are a good idea. As for being sexually active at the age of 12, that's something parents should talk to their kids about.

With the growing number of AIDs cases and the sexual awareness of children much younger then that I think it's a good thing. If the kids are going to have sex then they are going to have sex regardless, if they have access to condoms hopefully they will use them.
