Mostly, I count to five then I forget which hand I was counting
with(when catching the ball which is on a collision course).
In my opinion, it is better to do things in the present
and to consider the consequences of the present. The
mind is well-equipped in reflexively(based on present
foundation) building and referencing cognition. If I want
to be thoughtful then I consider the present and then that
present becomes the past from which I evaluate the
present. I don't want to spend excessive amounts of time
re-evaluating the past considering that thorough present
evaluation precludes the need for re-evaluation later
on. I don't talk in absolutes, so it can be worthwhile to
contemplate on the past, but not in real-time endeavors.
Furthermore, most evaluations aren't mutually exclusive
which complicates the counting; is the subject 0.25, 0.5,
0.75, 1, etc. In all pursuits, but review and contemplation, it
seems to be more practical to focus on the present to
ensure the integrity of the past, and it is this integrity which
allows us to make confident reference to the past in
the present; to reinforce the linear continuity at the
head of the string rather than the tail.

Isn't "counting" a way of "tallying?" Counting, while referred to literally as numbering, or figuring sums, is also a form of JUDGMENT. Wow! Look at my gains! Oh dear, I've had so many losses! As if we could really put them on a chart. How then would we judge quantity vs quality? What would be our measure? But most important, I wonder what would be the point in it. Count the days FROM or TO what? I'm content with the measure of my friends, yet I have no idea of their "count." (You do know that this can become so fixated, it leads to a psychological disorder--counting the number of tiles in the floor, the windows in a massive building.) All the things you mentioned "happened" or are "happening." What is the worth of tracking them?

Edit: I didn't feel this was a question about what we "value." We have memories that make us feel one way or another, but do we "count" or do we "value" them? "Boundaries" that draw a line between past & future don't exist; life flows. (Where would we draw the line, in any case? Yesterday?)

Counting, is something we learned when we were very small, it showed a certain amount of intelligence and mortar skills and logic. So I count now to make sure I am still able to get from 1-10 and 10-100.

As for counting on someone, some things, or whatever, one counts on her/himself and will find happiness and satisfaction from within. Radiating a sense of calmness that others around can count on always being there as a shelter from the harshness of the world.

We keep on counting because otherwise life would be just a stack of yesterdays - it would flow on endlessly, with no way to tell where on day (or hour, month, etc) begins and the next one ends. I'm all for living in the moment, but we need boundaries to mark the past and future as well.

Why does X stand for kisses and O stand for hugs? Why isn't Phonetic spelled the way it sounds? Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii? Why are there flotation contraptions under airplane seats somewhat of parachutes? Why are cigarettes bought in gasoline stations while smoking is against the regulation there? Why do fat hazard and narrow hazard mean a similar ingredient? in case you won't be able to drink and rigidity, why do you choose a driving force's license to purchase liquor, and why do bars have parking lots? have you ever imagined a international without hypothetical circumstances? How does the guy who drives the snowplow get to paintings interior the mornings?

I count them all.

as to why, see the following:

Columns totaled, sums made
Thus is the reckoning done
Too late to beg or persuade
Your life ‘tis soon be done.

Charge the account, pay the debt
Mark the journal, save the margin
Such is life realized with the get
As we hold to our sacred bargain

We collect the toll of our moral life
With each and every decision made
Here is the scene of our miserly strife
While we make our limited hour’s trade

Then comes the final accounting
When all is learned of our endeavor
To make the life we went a spouting
Afore we slip into that last forever.

lovers? no, only men do that! i don't count friends either. it doesn't matter how many you have, as long as the only one you have is a REAL friend! well, i think i count days till my vacations, years till i graduate, hours till i take a break, questions to be answered and answers to be given...... gains and losses don't interest me, they're a bit overestimated... and you know what? i will never stop counting! maths is my favourite subject!.........-if you get what i mean...

I count everything. I don't know why....I have the feeling that if I could stop counting, maybe I would be able to proceed with my life having a clearer mind...and much less stress.

I count it all.
Because it's life. Every question, answer, gain, loss, hour, day, year, friend, lover has contributed to who I am. Whether they are good memories, or they're bad or lost ones, they're still there and they still built me.
