Duke is widely regarded as one of the top universities in the world. It is routinely ranked in the top ten in the US, right up there in the middle of the Ivies.

UNC is also a respected school, probably one of the better state universities in the USA. Interestingly, despite the fierce athletic rivalry between these two schools, they cooperate in many academic programs and even have a very elite special program where students take half their classes on each campus (The Roberts scholars)

Although many people have issues with the US News college rankings, they are reliable as a general guide to which colleges have strong national reputations. Anyone can argue about the specific ranks, but no one whould deny that the 100 schools ranked highest by US News are all very prestigious and produce a high proportion of well-educated successful graduates. So, to get a feel for what schools are prestigious, check the US News rankings.

Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill are well known for their academics. Duke is one of the top private universities in the US, while UNC is one of the top public universities. They're about as famous as Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, and Michigan.

Bernard Baruch College is decently respected locally, but it's a non-entity on a national scale. Just one of many good local schools. Nowhere close to a Duke or UNC.

I suspect that even though you used the inappropriate term "name brand," you are asking about prestige and recognition.

Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, and Barnard are all superb colleges.

Frankly, I would rank Barnard a bit higher than Duke and UNC, as it is one of the Seven Sisters, and associated with (and has cross-registration with) Columbia University, which is an Ivy League university.

As a North Carolinian....I would venture to say that both Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill are two of the better schools on the eastern seaboard. As well as Wake Forest and NC State. What are you looking to pursue?(education wise) If you are looking for a medical career...go with Duke, but if you are more athletic...go with UNC

If the money's not an issue, then going to Duke probably opens more opportunities than the Morehead scholarship does.

Not sure what "name brand" means, but I'm sure all three schools retain intellectual property rights (trademarks) to their names and logos.

You already listed these in rank order of prestige and overall quality.

It's Barnard College BTW. Their names are exclusive to them, if that is what you mean.

Don't you mean BARNARD College?
