He was unsure about his true sexuality until his early 20's. He had been engaged once to a pickle heiress named Linda Woodward, but because of his questioning of his own sexuality, he became depressed and tried to commit suicide (the basis for the song "Someone Saved My Life Tonight".
Yes, he married a woman in 1984, recordng engineer Renarte Blauel, but the main reason was to feel 'loved" and perhaps have children one day. He realized he was living a lie, spiraled deeper into cocaine addiction, and divorced in 1988.
As far as the songs about ballerinas and Marilyn Monroe...well, the lyrics were not written by Elton...but by Bernie Taupin primarily, who was quite heterosexual. Tiny Dancer in fact was actually a lyric about Taupin's then wife, Maxine...who WAS the costume designer for the group (the "seamstress for the band").

So gay men can't sing about women?
I didn't think being gay was like turning an on and off switch.....

I don't think so. Maybe bi-sexual. I know he was married once, and I saw an interview with him after the marriage was over and he said that he was now completely gay.
