What's the big deal?
1.) It's a phone. Touch-screen, good looking, great options.
2.) It's an iPod.
3.) It's a computer. Email, internet browser, etc. It's a bit slower than it could be, but I expect that'll change soon enough.
So $600 is a bit steep, but we're looking at a new product launch here.

to answer I will have to say for a techie person it is a dream come true. It has what most people only dream of having on a phone. It touch screen was not enough , it internet is not enough , and you don,t really care about wasting minutes listening to voice mail from annoying a55 people (including the hange up voice mails), and you really are great with directions and don't need a map at your finger tips, Then this phone is not really worth it for you and you should not get Hyped about it.
But if you love your ipod and you want to choose which voice mail you want to listen to by seeing who actually left it for you then, (with this alone) this should be one of the most exciting phones ever made in your opinion and the hype is well worth it. price is a little steep but let look at it like this a Cell phone(smartphone) runs you $300 and up and an Ipod nano runs $199 and up so when purchashing both of these items you have brought an iphone and that sweet if you have these items already if not then you might consider the up-grade.

I believe we call that 'hype'. It's been getting that a year in advance before it's release. Probably, the only people that are waiting in line is parents wanting to get it for their teenager. Anyway, the phone itself is a disappoint to all. It's slow, doesn't even have the basic features of a regular cellphone, bad calling. Plus with all the money you are paying for the phone with the plan it totals almost $1000 and that's not even including international calling plus unlimited.
I really don't see what is so damn 'cool' about it. It's just another toy for teenagers in my opinion or for people who want to look trendy.

-My phone's camera is better. 2 megapixel was SO last year. The camera also has very few shooting options.
-Sure... "internet phone". Reviews already say the internet on the device is slow. It DOESN'T do 3G (heck, my phone was out even before this was announced, and it does 3G).
-It can’t record video.
-The software is buggy, sometimes it'll ignore input, or pause occasionly. It's basically like Vista on your phone.
-Despite being behind a bit behind in the way of camera and internet technology, this phone has a launch price of $600. To put that into perspective, my phone cost $250 (GBP>USD). More than twice the price for a ****tier camera and slow internet. Not to mension it's more like $1500, since AT&T lock you in on a contract. I'll stick with my Sony Ericsson kthx.
-Japan already has technologically superior phones, and they’re far cheaper.
-The screen gets scratched and smudged, especially when the iPhone instructs you to "pinch" the screen to zoom in on photos. The screen is also made of glass, drop and discover.
-This phone has around five hours talktime battery life. Have fun with that.
-Don't most phones have removable batteries? Not the iPhone.
-No expansion slot. Sure, you've got 4 or 8GB hard drive, but don't expect to fit it in your friend's SD slot.
-Heat issues: the iPhone can get very hot when it is in use.
-It doesn’t have a file browser/organizer. No games. It doesn’t do PXTs/MMS. It doesn’t have Instant Messaging support. Apple didn’t include GPS
-No SDK means no iPhone apps ^^. Steve Jobs doesn’t want third party developers for it.
-Deceptive Ads: Apple has been using models with gigantic hands in their advertisements for the iPhone in an effort to trick consumers into believing it is more compact.
-Don't you just hate iTunes?
-It's apple.
This phone is basically the next RAZR.

i don't know. maybe i'll get one further down the line, but i don't often buy items that are the first version. all the quirks and problems will be worked out by, say, the 3rd or 4th versions
