I thought a hobby of making antique looking chess, checkers, chinese checkers, etc., game boards would be fun. I just can't find any reference materials or websites that will help me in designing the proper size board, along with the look and feel.
Does anyone know of any good woodworking, antiquing or hobby books about this?

There seems to be a lot of places selling reproduction game boards, maybe you could get touch with them and ask where they get their items from, and track it down that way.

My dad does this. He designs all of his own templates.
He's 72 and remembers some of the games from his childhood and reproduces them for us. When he finishes a game we play it, sometimes he realizes that he has forgotten something, but the next time around everything works out well.
Have some faith in yourself and do the same.
Have fun
