That's a good question with shaky answers. The 1978-style didn't happen until mid-August, right now it is July 2. Boston has slipped a little the past few weeks, only regaining 3 of the 6 games they gave back (14 to 8 back to 11). The Yankees should be much farther out...like 16-18 games.

Since mid-April, people have been saying the Yankees are "done". An obvious answer is - No, of course not. It all depends on the second half of the season, whether they play as bad as they have been, or catch fire like so many teams do in the second half. For those that don't know, first half is pre-All-Star Break and second is post-All-Star.

It also depends on Boston. How well does Schilling do, Tavarez, Beckett, Dice-K and especially Wakefield. Does the offense kick back into gear?

Time will tell, but like Atlanta last year, all things eventually do come to an end. Look at the White Sox, Angels, Marlins, D'Backs, and Red Sox after their World Series Championships...

Personally, as a die-hard lifelong Yankees fan, I would like to see them miss the playoffs, overhaul the bullpen, get rid of aging starters and perhaps let loose some of these big name ego's whose only real job is to put people in the seats. Most of the 26 Championships were won with homegrown talent.

Not done, but not looking good either.

Yes they are done. There is no way they are comeing back from this. The Red Sox had it locked from the moment they came back on the first Yankee game from 6-2 in the 8th off of Rivera. That showed The Sox have more heart than the Yanks. The Sox also have better pitching and should easilly win the division even if the Yanks are hot right now. Beckett should win the Cy Young. There is no MVP in Bostons lineup but they hit well as a team and Drew and Manny should get hot any time now.

They're still alive mathematically, but are showing little signs of actually getting back into contention.

If you want to get the countdown going, as of today, the Red Sox magic number to eliminate the third-place Yankees is 73. Even if the Sox won 36 in a row while the Yanks lost 36, they'd still be in it mathematically (by a frayed thread), so the dream can live on into August at least.

Detroit is the current AL wildcard leader; their magic number to eliminate the Yankees is 75.

Why might the Yankees pass after Pujols while they already have an extremely reliable first baseman because it relatively is? I doubt they'll pay somebody $20 million in simple terms to be a DH. particular i may well be shocked if the Yankees signed Pujols. i'm ill of listening to all this BS approximately finding out to purchase, it happens throughout the time of activities, this is talked approximately as unfastened corporation. i'm no longer a Yankees fan yet i'm bored with stupid questions.

No, they aren't done yet. You can never count the Yankees out. They'll have to work really hard the 2nd half the season. And with some help from the teams that play the Red Sox, we'll be there in the end.

They appear that way but as an eternal optimist that I am, the second half is coming and the Yankees are traditionally a second half team. A change is coming and I think it'll be at the break. Expect to see Joe Girardi as your new manager, at least I'm crossing my fingers.....

yes they are done my friend

they are 11 games out of first place and are way behind in the wild card race

their players are not doing well at all

they have way too many distractions and they can't ignore them so they're not gonna develop team chemistry put together a solid run for the playoffs...i just don't see that happening

its over

Dude, they have a 4 game set against the twins, and then a three game set against Anaheim, thank god it's at home, but if they don't go ATLEAST 5-2 in those 7 games, they are DONE DONE DONE.
