Depends on what you like to read - being a man I can not say I have much experience of romantic novels:-)) but if you want thrillers you could try John Grisham, his books are really good.
If you like biographies I can recommend Kate Adie's book The Kindness of Strangers, it is her life as a reporter and is equally thrilling in a different way. She's been shot three times, walked the streets as a hooker for a couple of hours (in Bristol) has picked up minor things like amoebic dysentry and experienced difficulties like getting knickers and bra on in a tent while conducting a conversation with half a dozen male colleagues (also struggling with their underwear). Her assignments all over the globe make fascinating reading.
If you like funny books you could try a Terry Pratchett novel - or funny and serious try Leo Marks From Silk to Cyanide, his book about SOE during the war, very very funny but also dramatic and moving.

That is really odd because studies show that young/teen boys are less inclined to read female protagonists and female authors. Part of JK Rowlings success is that she published under JK, and not JoAnne, thus not giving young male readers the 'turn off' of seeing a female author. Her main character is male. Young women will read either female or male protagonists so traditionally there has been less emphasis on what appeals to them.

Go for some classics. Jane Austen books are excellent and a good way to start!

But sometimes the best thing you can do is go to a book store and start picking out books that look appealing to you. Most stores don't mind if you take a seat and read a bit before you decide to purchase.

Have fun!

Recently I read If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino. It was quite good. My favorite books include Paradise lost, Steppenwolf, anything by Dostoevsky and Kafka. They are all very good, but also most folks don't much care to read them. It really all depends on what kind of books you are in to. Oh, and Ender's Game is also a good quick read that raises lots of compelling questions. Have fun times reading!

If you haven't read To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, it's a classic, I just read The House at Riverton and it was really good. For a good fun read try anything by Marian Keyes. I would recommend (if you do choose her) that you read the following of her books in order by publishing date (as they concern the same sisters but are not sequels) Watermelon, Rachel's Holiday, angels, Anybody Out There?
Rachel's Holiday is my favourite. I have read them repeatedly and bought them as gifts for friends.
Annie Freeman's Fabulous Travelling Funeral is good for women.
