Do you get paid extra if you do work??
Here in Britain if we work on 'Bank Holidays' most work places have to pay their employees extra...

Most manufacturing businesses and offices close on the 4th of July, but most retail businesses remain open and offer big "Fourth of July Sales". There are a lot of family picnics, parades, and fireworks displays. My own family is having a picnic at noon and then going to the local park at dusk to watch the fireworks. I'm surprised that you Brits don't celebrate "getting rid of the colonists day" on the fourth as well. We WERE a pain in the backside.

Yes, it's Independence Day. We all get the day off to celebrate the day we were freed from British rule to become our own nation.
=D
EDIT: I came back and saw you asked if anyone gets paid extra if they do work. Well, in my boyfriend's case, he works at the railroad and if he gets to work on the 4th, he gets paid double. But that's also the same for Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.

Yeah...it's a national holiday, but not everyone gets the day off...
Btw...your ignorance is excused...you are, after all, British...
Hehehee...you know I'm kidding... ;-)
(I'm pretty sure you get paid extra for working July 4th)

Yes, it for people in the United States of America. It is the day when we celebrate our independence as a country. And also the day we eat a ton of hotdogs, drink too much beer and watch some fireworks.
It's awesome.

YES -- it IS a National Holiday
Some folks do NOT get the day off of work though.
HOWEVER ... for those of us who have VOLUNTEERED to do what others will not (which is to SERVE in the US Armed Forces) ... we proudly reflect on our HONORABLE Military Service, the sacrifices of those who have gone before us, and yes, the BLESSINGS of Freedom ... that we have received through our collective hard work and the rights we have through the Constitution of the United States .... (and the amendments)

Yep. It's our Independence Day. No work, unless you work in a hospital or prison or other essential job... or Blockbuster and Walmart. Huh. Go figure.

no longer as such, yet we pass patriotic at "final night of the Proms." The Proms are a classical song pageant, from countless places in London. on the final night, we have fun such songs as "Rule Britannia," "Jerusalem" and the national Anthem. in my view, i think pleased with being British perpetually - i do no longer choose a particular day to be patriotic.
