A crossover cable (which is different than regular ethernet) will be fine for playing with just the two of you. If you both want to play online you'll need a hub or router.

There are several ways to connect a laptop to a PC.

1) if you have an Ethernet card installed on your laptop and on your PC you can directly connect them with a cross-over LAN cable (in case You don't have network hub). or a straight LAN cable (if you are using a network hub or network switch between the computers)

2) via infrared (laptop and PC must have infraed)

3) Direct cable connect from parallel port to parellal port (help available in windows).

4) using a Null modem cable from one serial port to the other.

5) You can also connect modem to modem. but this method is bit difficult.

You can use wireless networking by getting a wireless network adapter for your desktop and setting it upwhich is better than infrared because its faster and the adapters dont have to point to each other. The laptop will probably already have a wireless adapter too.

Alternatively, yes, you need a crossover RJ-45 Cat 5e networking cable whichis faster again.

If you want,,, you could use the wireless internet (WiFi) for the laptop. The main internet connection is in the desktop computer. You have to have the router that is connected to your desktop. This router is the little "satellite" so that your laptop could have the internet connection. Then you connect both of the computers to the internet and play the game via internet.
