I hear many people quite rightly saying that the Muslim population should repsect our laws, and that we don't go to their countries and change their laws.

But isn't that exactly what we have done in Iraq, Afganistan and most importantly Palestine? Nobody there wanted us, and we have made a right mess of it. Most of the problems in Iraq are between themselves, but this is becuase we demolished the infrastructure and imposed our rules which clearly do not work.

I'm not saying they're right, but aren't we a bit hypocritcal?

We are a bit hypocritical.

For example, I hear many people complaining about how the Indian's in our local community do not really integrate that much, and yet when I went to India last year, and visited a temple there, I heard many British people asking why they had to cover up to enter the temple - they were oblivious to the customs of the country. Ok there's a difference between living somewhere and just visiting, but you should still respect other people's customs, and society.

Also, i agree with what you say about Iraq etc. We went in to get rid of a dictator, that has been done, but we have left a worse mess. Surely this could have been done more diplomatically, using sanctions, and talks. Or at least more effort in the talks, before this reduculous WMD's excuse was invented.

But yes, we are hypocritical.

No we are not hypocritical. First of all when the military first rolled into Iraq we WERE welcomed by every civilian there. Noone thought living under Saddam Hussien was a good thing. He committed genocide and coluded with terrorists for christs sake! The fact that we got rid of Saddam was welcomed by most people around the world, Iraqi or otherwise. But all the good we did was convieniently forgotten when a lack of proper planning let the terrorists roll in from neighbouring states to take advantage of the power vaccuum.

But as for your primary question, it isn't just the muslim population and it is not just laws. This is just my personal opinion, but I think EVERY immigrant who comes here must first of all have a skill that this country needs (nurse/doctor/engineer/trades, etc.) and then respect our laws and not expect their own laws to take primacy (ie. a lot of muslims want Sharia law in this country which is unnacceptable, and don't get me started on so called 'honour' killings). But they must also respect our culture, make an effort to fit in, that means dress like us, SPEAK OUR LANGUAGE or at least make an effort to, and not expect us to conform to their ways.

If you believe that, then you are saying it was OK to keep Saddam in power, even though he was not elected by a fair system of voting, Hitler was the same, once he had power he disposed of the election system and put himself in charge of the country, then look what happened. OK the west sold Iraq weapons to fight the Iranians, who the west didn't like because of their terror tactics, and America supported the Afghans to try and get the Russians out, which worked well, till they turned their weapons onto the Americans. For sure the west is its own worst enemy, and like to interfere in other nations, America being the worst culprit at present. What the west should do is keep out of other nation political affairs and start taking care of its own, but then we end up with leaders like Hitler and Saddam again, then we all get drag into wars, because of one of these power crazed idiots. So i guess we have to interfere in other nations affairs to try and stop another world war, like it or not, that is reality, that's the way mankind is.

What a thought provoking question!

Hypocrisy=politics, I remember Mr Blair condemning Iran for detaining 14 Royal Navy personnel for a few days without trial whilst prisoners have spent years in Guantanamo Bay without trial with the support of the same Mr Blair.

It is also downright pompous to believe Western society is desirable in all countries and cultures.

Globalization is quickly turning a World of diversity and interest into a homogenous, bland, sterile, culturless and boring union.

We should embrace a multi cultural planet .

There is a difference between going to war, and say moving to Iran and wearing a mini-skirt and not expecting to get hanged for it.

If anyone of non british origin comes to live in this country, they should respect and live by our laws - we didnot ask them to this country - if they are not willing to live by the rules in this country then they should go live somewhere else.
