I´m Cdn., and I hope this doesn´t come across as being anti-American, because I´m not trying to be. Please, nobody should take offense. This is a general question, so I am speaking very GENERALLY.
I find that Canadians are (in general) are more polite, and do not tend to overreact as much as a "typical" (meaning, stereoptyipcal) American. They are more tolerant of people from other backgrounds, and are willing to stick up for them more than in the USA (Yes, there is racism in Canada too, but it is definately not as extreme).
I think Canadians are generally more laid-back than their southern neighbours, and are more open. Canadian newscasts usually show some rather boring political debates about this or that, but American news often ends up leaving me feeling that my life, or my way of life, or at least "something" is in danger. I think Americans live in an aura of "fear" sometimes (mostly created by politicians and media), which of course, affects a lot of other things. Even Micheal Moore showed this by going up to Cdn. houses and finding all of the front doors unlocked when people were home.
To round this up, I´ll tell of a David Letterman show (years ago) when he went out to Americans on holiday (I think it was Mallorca - Spain, or Canary Islands...somewhere they had to fly to). He asked the Americans to point to where they were on a map of the world, and they couldn´t. No - of course not all Americans are like this. But it did make a point about the general American knowledge about world geography.
(Now before everyone gives me a thumbs-down - I know it´s coming... I´ll also admit that I as a university grad., I met someone from Turkey, and had to ask him where it was. He obviously didn´t take it too personally though, and a few years later we got married!)

America has much larger concentrations of people and a far more diverse population. It is also a lot colder in Canada much of the time. The crime rate in Alaska is pretty much the same as Canada even though there are readily available firearms. Canada is also far more isolated from other countries with only the US on it's southern border.
The entire population of Canada is about 33 million occupying 10 million square miles. On any given work day the total number of people in Manhattan is 15 million occupying 24 square miles.
33 million Canadians? We have 24 million illegal aliens for crying out loud.
Give me a break!

Well other then those huge differences not much. I believe Canadians need to speak up in restaurants when they receive food that they do not like or is below par. We Canadians accept it and pay while our American friends wouldnt dream of being so foolish. Americans tend to bring to the media every little detail about murder cases if they are stars. Alot of our dirty laundry stays in the basket. Our politicians are a dull lot I must admit though. We are a passive group. While the Americans are take charge types. Other then that we are pretty much the same eh?

# ! is that those statements are true, and they are figured on per capita, so the size of the population would not be a factor.
I think the main reasons are that very few Canadians are allowed to have guns, and secondly, they have many other well funded social programs, so people don't have to rob, steal and pillage in order to just survive.
Also those countries (and US states) that do NOT have capital punishment always have a much lower murder rate.

Yes,I understood your question, actually, better than most native speakers questions.
The usa has many problems,of it's own making, that Canada just doesn't have, come to think of it,not many other countries have either.
