One would hope that over time, one is learning and retaining knowledge, and growing and maturing as a person. Some struggle with that and coin the phrase, "I don't wanna grow up", but sooner or later, reality catches up with us all, and we have to face facts. And in reference to your road metaphor, well, the road needs to be paved and maintained, nothing lasts forever, and if you neglect it, it will have pot holes and have cracks and be difficult to use.

Your identity becomes clearer as you age and have more life experiences and make choices, you know. I wouldn't say it gets holes or pockmarks in it. It gets clearer. More like a filmy mirror that over time gets sharper.
