Is it, as I've been told, that they are more difficult to hitch up and make shorter if they atre pleated?

You are too funny.
Having been a pleated skirt wearing naughty Catholic school girl for more than half my life I can safely say that pleats play no part whatsoever in the length of one's skirt.
I remember at the beginning of the year, we'd get fitted for our uniforms and they'd be *gasp* to our knees. No problemo. You just take the waist and roll it over and over until the skirt was mid thigh and... voila! You've become a naughty Catholic school girl!
Brings back lots of memories... we were absolutely wretched: smoking, drinking, chasing the boys, lying, cheating... all the good parts of the bible, right?!

Indeed.The same reason most cheerleading skirts are pleated,I went through this when I was a cheerleader and we had to get approval for our uniforms.Apparently the pleats don't raise the skirt up as much if you lift your leg up,i.e,our principal didn't even like the fact we were doing jumps and flips,so we had to order pleated skirts..there's probably a whole underground board of scientists that study this **** lol.But my daughter is starting Catholic school this year,and they don't have uniforms,so I guess it depends upon the school.

Well... apart from that is makes our legs look skinnier and in better shape, yes they are quite difficult to roll up, because the pleast are not aligned and go all over the place and so its easy to spot if a skirt is rolled.

Hmm maybe because they think it's more proper. Pleated skirts look more granny-ish?

Well, it is harder. And yes, I was one too. But as another poster pointed out: you can roll the waistband at least a little!

Its because they require alot more work to shorten the hem on the skirt.

- and why do you want to know!?
leased these girls do wear skirts though
- most girls wear trousers to school / and innthe office too!
best of all though
- they always wear tights too!
- shame most girls don't keep that up in latter life!

Wallmart has EVERYTHING. try a thrift store make your own with a pattern
