My husband and I just got married. We want to have kids in a couple of years. I've never taken birth control before and I was
wondering if it would be Ok to start now. Would it lessen my chances of getting pregnant when I want to? I've heard that women can have a difficult time getting pregnant after being on birth control for over a year.

I think that this is something you should discuss with your doctor. After taking the pill it can cause some delay, because it takes time for the pill to get out of your system. For example I was on it for 6 years almost, maybe a little longer. I have been off since October of 06, so almost 9 months. My cycle is still to get back to regular again. But that is after 6 years.

If you start them now, it will be at least a year on them, if you say a couple and mean 2 years exactly I would say you'd only be on them for a little over a year, because your body takes time to regulate to them, and you should stop at least 3 months before ttc. Just remember, every woman is different, when the doctors are telling you things its an average. Mine told me to stop about 3 months before ttc to give my body time to get back to cycle without the hormones, and I'm not still. Also a friend stopped before her wedding, was not safe on honeymooon thinking she couldn't get pregnant because she just got off pills 2 weeks before, and came home pregnant.

I just got married last month... And I had been on the NuvaRing for about a year.. and the pill before that. We decided not to wait to have kids, and after stopping BC at the end of last cycle.. I just got my positive test result this morning. It may take a while for some... but there are some of us that get pregnant the first try! Good luck with your marriage!

I was on birth control for two years and was very regular. My husband and I are not TTC and this is our first month. Everyone is different. I asked my Dr. a lot of q's when I first started the pill and she told me that the pill is safe and there should be no problem in becoming pregnant. They suggest you wait 1-2 months after coming off the pill. I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo and it eased my menstral cramps as well as helped my skin. It takes one month for the pill to be effective so use a backup form of bc. Good luck....

As long as you have regular cycles now then taking birth control won't affect your chances of getting pregnant later. However, don't use the Depo Provera shot for birth control because this particular method has many side effects and might cause fertility problems. I always really liked the NuvaRing for birth control.
If you still aren't sure that a hormonal method is right for you then there are many non-hormonal methods to consider--diaphram, cervical cap, condoms, vcf, spermicidal jelly, and natural family planning.

I was on birth control for 5 years before we decided to try for a baby. I got pregnant the first month. The same thing happened to my sister in law and several friends.

Maybe you should try something non hormonal. If you are waiting a few years, a hassle free option is to get a Paraguard IUD. It uses copper to repell sperm, so it really won't affect your periods. IUD's seem scary, but it really didn't hurt when it was inserted and afterwards I forgot all about it. I also didn't have any problems getting pregnant after it was removed(also painless). Paraguard lasts up to 10 years but you can have it removed at any time while you are on your period.

got pregnant 10 month after stopping birthcontrol with my first after being on it for 4 years (using the pill)...took 4 months after stopping (the patch) to get pregnant this time.

talk to your dr about what method is right for you. but as long as you are healthy...you shouldn't have a problem when you're ready
