Black.
If you need to give me a long label, call me an
American African. Afterall, I am an American first.

you will get many answers to this. whereas there may be a majority that like to be called african americans, this can be troublesome when we look solely at color and assume.
Their are black people (brown as some here have stated) that live in the US whose heritage goes back to other nations. In particular, some caribean islands and even european countries.
A Jamaican man I knew while in the Marines was very vocal about the fact that he was Jamaican, not African-American.
I tend to use the term African-American only when I am talking about groups of people not when talking about individuals.

To me, it doesn't matter. The whole african-american thing doesn't cover all women of color.
Some people prefer to be called Caucasian instead of white, and some people prefer to be called African-American instead of black...
But to me, black isn't disrespecful at all.

I think I have seen this question about forty times on here you would think everyone would have got this straight by now for goodness sakes. Lets assume either is fine and thats about it wouldnt you say? It seems I cannot open up yahoo without a race related question being poised.

The ploitically correct is not colored because white (beige) is also a color.
Black is not right because they are between brown and dark brown and very rarely black.
African American isn't right because you don't see the progeny of european settlers calling themselves German-American, Irish-American, etc.. (unless their parents or grandparents were born there.
The correct term that many of my friends use is dark-skinned.

Years ago, I asked a friend of mine, Pete, where he preferred to be called "black" or "african american", and he gave me a very profound answer - "I prefer to be called Pete".
Every person is an individual, and has their own taste about what they look to be called. If you are uncertain, ask the person and then use the name/title/whatever that they prefer for them.

I always wondered this, as there are many people of many countries reading this.
I am in Canada, and we do not say that here. I am sure in Briton they do not say African American.
Just a though
Good question
