Some of it is religious beliefs, some is because they are just straight out crazy. To some, America has everything, and we are greedy, so they try to prove a point. It is what it is.

Apparently they're wanting to convert us into a Islamic state.
What they will achieve in absolute terms is either nothing or the possibility of a lot of death in the West and radioactive glass in the Middle East..

They believe that anyone not supporting their religion are infidels, and they believe that their Prophet proclaimed Death To The Infidels.
They also think they'll get a better place in Heaven by carrying out their terrorism.
The word 'delusion' springs to mind.
