Sadness or happiness is a state of mind. The universe/ creation provides us with plain screen in which we have to paint. But it is up to us paint what we want whether it is sadness, happiness, anger etc.
So motto is enjoy the life as it has been provided to us, not reacting to what is happening around!!!.

Not always. When I am happy I do not lose control over myself. I try to keep my feet on the ground and not become overexcited. I thank God for the happiness that he gives me. But at the same time, I am well aware of the fact that happy times give way to sad times just as sad times give way to happy times. I always pray to God to give me the strength to endure difficulties and come out happy once again.

when i'm happy, i don't feel sad... it's not that i no longer care that about being sad, that is if you're talking specifics... for example, if you're enjoying a spoonful of icecream, you don't think about the taste of something awful, right? your focus or state of mind or heart is where it should be... in that moment... unless there some sort of bug or worm in that scoop of icecream, then the feeling continues until your focus changes again...

I know it works for me! I don't have time to think about being sad when something has made me happy.

perhaps,or i guess it's only a temporary mindset.
sorrow or atleast semblance of feeling sad does come back sooner or later, depending on circumstances.
but yes, when one is settled finally having achieved long & short term goals, life is happy, a pang here & a twinge there stops mattering, the evolution of a man that is !!
but very few of us actually reach there you know when we stop caring about sorrow.

Of course that when you think you are happy you no longer care about the opposite state.
But you said THINK, not 'when you ARE happy'. So your question is a bit tricky, mind ya.
