I bough 512 MB of RAM for my laptop. initially it had only 256 so I though that when i put them together it would be a good size. Unfortunaly they wouldn't work together. When both of them were in the computer used only one of them. are they not compatible or is there something else? what is the reason. actually can somebody give me a good explanation?

It's an Acer aspire 3000. It only reads the one in the first slot. i don't think it has a limit on the RAM. i guess they aren't compatible then. thanx for answers.

Without knowing the make and model of the laptop and the types of memory, it I can only guess.
Odds are that the two types of memory are not compatible with each ohter. Such as they are a different speed or type of memory. The other possibility, depending on the age of the laptop, is that its hardware is not able to handle more than 512 mb of RAM. When the both is, what does the laptop see? Only the chip in the first or "A" slot of the laptop or only 512 mb of RAM regardless of how the chips are arranged? If it is seeing only the first chip, then they are not compatible. If always 512, then that is probably the limit of the laptop.
But would need a little more detail to give a 100% answer.

i think you might just as well go and see the place from where you bought it. otherwise you can contact its manufacturer to know its compability. other wise remove the 256 mb of ram and put directly the 512 one . it is quite enough. OR i think that for computers u cannot have odd memory's, i think u will have to put either 2 512 mb's or two 256 mb's

For the most part, the memory modules should be the same size and speed. If not, you are likely to get these types of problems. Some of the newer motherboards handle the memory slots differently and do not have this issue. However, it is still best to have the same speed of memory.

hmmm assuming it has two ram slots
and the ram in that slot works ( 512 or 256) but not the other one
possibly the other slot is for another type of ram? ddr2 or ddr?

There should be no reason they do not work together unless you have a bad memory slot or they are Rdram modules. Rdram must be in matching pairs.
