Our fingers aren't as long as our toes, in scientific reasons, because as we humans "evolved" we tended to use the toes for nothing other than balancing our feet to walk. Our toes there on became smaller every once in a while. Our fingers stayed about the same because we used them alot for purposeful reasons. Also the bones that make up the toes (phalanges) connect to larger bones unlike our finger phalanges which means for no reason to really have big toes because the larger bones balance it out :).

Goodness me!!! Imagine what the designs of flip flops would be and how are we going to move in them. Lol....
Jokes aside, Eric, have you tried standing on your hands with your feet in the air like most kids used to do ? While doing that, we are actually using our palms for support. If our toes are that long, how are they going to support us for the whole day? When we walk, we would have the feeling like we are wearing flippers (those worn by scuba divers). Gosh! Oh no! imagine further... people having ten rings on their toes. Yucks!!!! Well, nice to have all your thought provoking questions here again. It was so boring with you...

We do a lot of work with our fingers. If they were short and stubby like our toes, then we could not get much accomplished. Just think how the great writers and inventors had to use their fingers. They couldn't have succeeded if they used their toes.

It's because the fingers are involved in fine motor movement and the toes are mainly for balance now that we don't have to use them to swing through the trees anymore.

Fingers are for gripping and giving the "middle finger". Why do you thing the middle finger is the longerst?
Toes or for balance.

I don't think this is a non-sensical question, and I have wondered about what you ask myself.
I just think that this question is in the wrong section. (It should be in the "Science" section).
I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you.
But I assume that evolution adjusted feet to locomotion, and long toes became unnecessary.
(In any case, if you don't mind, I think I'm going to pose this question in another more recommended section).

Because we use our fingers to pick things up and do everyday things. We need our toes to walk etc but we can walk on them being that short!

We don't usually grab things with our feet, and we don't walk on our hands. Over thousands of years we have evolved this way.
I think we'll have 12 fingers in the future =)

Since we are not apes and do not have to climb trees we have long fingers to play th piano, guitar and hold ribs. Our fingers have gotten longer with times from licking the barbecue sauce off them.
