I bought a TP-LINK 54M Wireless Router from Hong Kong. The model is TL-Wr541G. My current ISP is optus. I have no idea how to set up the wireless router.

This is not as hard as you may fear. As with any project, do ONE step at a time and you should get there.

First, you need to configure the router with a wired connection. After that works, then address wireless. Never try to configure the router using wireless configuration as this can create major trouble.

I presume you have a dynamic IP from your ISP. If you were told by the ISP that you have a static IP you would have been given the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, etc.

Turn off the modem. Connect a cat 5 cable from modem ethernet port to the router WAN port. Check with router manual to see if you need a straight or a cross cable (often router makers include the cable so check the manual). Turn on your modem; wait for 0.5 minutes or more and then turn on the router.

Make sure that your pc is set to obtain IP address automatically for its wired port. (Right click My Network Places, click on properties, right click on the wired lan port, highlight Internet Connections (TCP/IP) and click properties button; make sure the Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS automatically are checked.) Connect a straight cat 5 cable from router LAN port to your pc network port.

When I tell you to configure router, you do this by opening the web browser and entering the default gateway IP address. More on that below.

Open command prompt (start, run - type in cmd and hit enter). At the prompt type in "ipconfig" without quotes (never type the quotes in when you are in command prompt; I use the quotes to identify what you are to type in) and hit enter. You should be given an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway address (IP in the form 192.169.x.y where x = 0 or 1 in most cases; y = any number from 2 - 255; subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.x.1 in most cases where x is the same value as it is in the IP address). Write down these addresses on a piece of paper as you will need them later. If this did not appear, type in "ipconfig /renew" and hit enter. If this gives you an IP address you are ready to proceed. If this does not give you an IP address, check your router manual as it must have some need for a static LAN IP.

If you received a LAN IP address, in command prompt, type in "ping " [where is the ip address of the default gateway you received above; e.g. if default gateway is 192.168.1.1, type in "ping 192.168.1.1"] and hit enter. You should receive 4 successful pings. This states the pc is communicating with the router. Now in command prompt type in "ping 4.2.2.2" and hit enter. You should see 4 successful ping responses. If not, you must configure the router WAN port for a dynamic public IP (unless you have a static IP in which case you must enter the static IP, default gateway, subnet mask, and DNS your ISP gave you). Check router manual for directions on how to configure router WAN port.

If "ping 4.2.2.2" is successful, type in "ping yahoo.com" and hit enter. If you are successful all is fine. If not, check the router WAN port config for DNS servers as something is wrong there.

Once successful with "ping yahoo.com" you have internet on this pc. Open web browser to confirm this.

Now go to the router LAN config. See your manual on how to do this. Once in LAN config, make sure the router assigns IP addresses via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol, DHCP. I suggest you limit the IP address range (e.g. IP starts at 192.168.x.100 and ends at 192.168.x.200 as this gives you the ability to run 101 devices on your LAN, way more than you will use).

Now on the router go to the wireless configuration. Change the ssid to something other than the default. Give it a name that you will understand but no one else does (e.g. bob_smith_house is not a good idea but some not so clear i.d. like rtr20070103 may be fine as no one understands it). Activate the wireless (as it usually is turned off at the factory) if needed.

Enable encryption. If WPA encryption is available use it and set up an encryption key that is a mixture of upper and lower case letters and numbers that people will not understand; this is your access password so keep it recorded and secure; write it down and record what you did.

Enable MAC address validation. Record the MAC addresses of all wireless pcs you want to be allowed to enter your network. This is the wireless network connector MAC address which can be found on the device or in command prompt of each pc by typing in "ipconfig /all" in command prompt - and checking what command prompt calls physical address. Note that MAC addresses are 12 characters long and sometimes every 2 characters are separated by a : symbol. Some routers require the : entry and others forbid it. You MUST enter the MAC of all wireless network interfaces on all pcs you want to access the router wirelessly and this is a security matter. A failure to enter the MAC properly will block the pc from accessing even if all other steps are accurate.

Now leave this wired pc and go to one you want to access the router wirelessly. Have this pc in the same room as the router so we do not have signal loss issues ( you can more it later). Make sure the wireless port is configured to obtain IP address automatically just like you did for the wired one. Go to the wireless port on this pc. Configure wireless by turning it on, and configuring it with the encryption you set up on the router (WPA if possible and enter the preshare key when asked). Search for wireless points and you should see your ssid; click on it and you should be permitted to enter. Open command prompt, enter "ipconfig /all" and see if you have an ip address for the wireless port. If you do not, check the wireless config as something is wrong (often it is in encryptio, preshare key, or MAC validation). If you do, type in "ping 4.2.2.2" and this should be successful. Then type in "ping yahoo.com" which should be successful. If so open browser and you should have internet access. Repeat this on all wireless pcs.

When all are up, record what you did and keep it in a safe place. Change the user name and password from the system default. SAVE YOUR ROUTER CONFIGURATION AS THE ROUTER DIRECTS YOU TO DO. Download a copy of the configuration from router to pc if you can do so (not all routers permit this).

Record and keep all config info in a safe place. You will need it.
