How did people choose the things they used for money ?

The first money was probably something like shells that could be traded by people to get the things they wanted. Shells were valued as decorative items. The metals used for money need to be as chemically inert as possible to prevent rust or corrosion. Gold, silver, and copper are commonly used for coins. These are also metals valued for decorative items.
