I have registered for the dormitory and in order to get an ip address i have to find the mac address of my laptop. I have typed ipconfig /all in the DOS but the computer didn't show the number. Also, using start > run doesn't work. What is the problem? What are the other ways to get mac address? I really appreciate your help since i must use internet as soon as possible.

I went with what yahoo had said and tried system information>components>network>adapter. Then i saw the mac address(which then appeared to be fake!),gave it to the related person in the dormitory and took the ip address. However, when i tried to connect, i saw a different mac address which is the real one as i remember from the last time and the couldn't establish the connection. Tomeorrow,I will talk to the people in the computer center and ask them to change my given mac address to the real one that i see now. I hope they will accept to change it.Anyway, thanks for all your interest. But still i can't understand how and why a computer shows a fake mac address!

Well, you should have that information somewhere in the documentation you got with the pc. If it's a PCMCIA-card it's propably standing on a sticker on it.
Worth a try might be typing in getmac in the console.

Otherwise you could try to set the MAC-address using the properties of the wlan device (it won't change the actual MAC address, but will use it instead of the one of the wlan card).

It is imprinted on the circuit board as a sticker to it; either PCI for desktop or PCMCIA for laptop. It look like hexes with ":" after each pair of numbers.

Hopefully it is not an internal built-in port But it could be worse that it is a built-in that is not supported by Microsoft itself, in which case we can't offer any direct resolution to your problem.

try winipcfg in the run box(start / run )

Make sure you are on your correct adaptor!!!!

shoulda been listed in ipconfig /all

MAC's are hard written to the device

Are you looking for wireless adaptor or ethernet????

Hey, i have no other suggestions but just wanted to make sure that you are looking for the "physical address" in the DOS prompt window as it is referred to as this here
