I have been to both countries and I would have to say Greeks hate the Turks more. The average Turk doesn't even think about the Greeks, when I was in Turkey people asked where I was going and when I told them Greece they didn't really say anything bad at all. BUT when I was in Greece and told people I had just come over from Turkey well everybody I met that asked me that question and the Turkey issue came up you should have heard the things they had to say. I just don't understand.

Many bad things happen to the past from both sides, as many bad things happen to the world every day. We can't live on today the past. Today is another day . I don't think today Greeks hate the Turkish or Turkish hate the Greeks. Some, who may want this to be this way, are trying to persuade the others that there is a hate between the two countries. That , of course, doesn't happen especially to the young people who want the peace the good relations and to having fun.
There are so many problems and dangers which have to confront the two countries inside and outside , and they must concentrate to how they solve them and how they will develop.

The Turkish occupied us many many years ago and we were 400 years under their "control" until someday we finally rose to our feet and fought for our country, our rights and our freedom and now we're free! And an other issue is Cyprus but I'm so tired of all these that I just want us to live happily and be friends but there are still some Greeks and Turkish who don't want the same thing.I don't know what to say anymore..we live in 2007 let's just forget everything and be friends.

I think you'll find that Greeks do not hate Turkish because of Cyprus ... in fact Cyprus is a totally different country. Greeks know what happened not just 400 yrs ago but also lately. My husband's grandparents died a few years ago. They fled (then Constantinopoli) Istanbul when then were young and saw the slaughter of many Greeks living there. There are still a few surviving Greeks who remember what happened less than a 100 yrs ago. Visit Sampsouda and Sinopi in Preveza or Nea Smyni in Athens - there's planty of people ready to tell you why they hate Turks. Also the Turkish planes and boats still torment Greece by illegally entering Greek airspace and waters.
Going back to my husband's Pontios grandparents - they told me that Greek was not allowed to be spoken and Orthodox was not allowed to be practiced. This also happened during World War II.
I was reading about the Ottoman rule in Preveza during Ali Pasha's time - The turks rode through Preveza and sliced the heads off the innocent people. The writings say the roads of Preveza were rivers of blood.
Unfortunately or fortunately the Greek schools still make sure the children know what happened and this starts as young as 5 yrs old. So the fear and hatred of Turkish people is set to stay in Greece.

The majority of Greeks and Turks want peace. What most of us want is work and freedom to live our way of life. It's some politicians, and a minority of fanatics (especially in Turkey - let's be honest!) who can't stand to see the two peoples getting on and moving forward. The fanatics will just have to stop dreaming of past glories! I think the ball is in the Turkish court now...if they can get rid of the fanatics and keep a democratic, forward-looking government in power the future looks good for them. It's in both countries' interest to have happy neighbours.

Dear Jonathan,
As I noticed It is your first question.
Also you have not answer any Q yet....
You say that you went to Turkey and they were ok, but in Greece they are very nice as well (so what is the problem?).
After all of these ascertainments you are claiming ( making this Q), that Greeks hate Turks.
All that provocation in Q&A makes me sick of you and some others users!

well, they just didnt have a good relationship. between the crusades and the wars, blah blah. but we shouldnt look into the past, but 2 the present. we share this world and we should look at eachother as neighbors, not terrorists, even though some ppl are like that. we need to learn to love and forget about the hatred.
