Well, I've been travelling to many countries, and yeah they did asking me (well my parents) to show them bank statement, or any other proofs to show my parents could afford the trip and that they wouldn't stay or extend their stay in those countries illegally (That's why they need to see your letter of employment and the bank statement). Well those are required if you apply the visa in embassy offices. So yeah, every embassy offices will ask a letter of employment and bank statement, so it's not just Indonesia only. Every country does.
Have a nice trip to Indo....

Go for the visa on arrival if your country is elligible. Only available at major airport, Bali and Jakarta + others.
10 USD for 6 days and 25USD for 30 Days.
You need a passport with 6 months validity, a return ticket and that's it.
In Bali I never had to give anything extra on top of the regular price. Balinese are probably less greedy and know the tourists are essential to their economy.

You should try Visa on Arrival, at an International airport, such as Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK), or Ngurah Rai International Airport. But, you should bring a bit more money. And don't forget to bring Rupiahs, because there some bad guy will demand your money. If you are American, they'll say you must pay US$10, and if you are European, they'll say you must pay them 10 Euro. But, it's not a bad idea to apply your visa at the nearest Indonesian Embassy. For your notes, I'm an Indonesian.

You can apply tourist visa at nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate in your country.
Or you can apply visa on arrival at the airport. Officially, it'll cost you around $25. If you prefer to get visa on arrival, I suggest you to slide an extra $10 bill under your application so that the officer will issue your visa quickly. It's not a bribery, it's just an allowance or incentive for that officer to process your application quickly.

I applied for and recieved my visa for indonesia in the U.S. I did notice lines for getting a visa at the airport while going through immigration in Bali. I think you can just get your visa at the airport but you should Check with the Indo embassy in your country to be sure. Here is what is says on the Indo site
Tourist Visa(TV)
A tourist visa can be obtained in your country from the Indonesian embassy or consular office. This will avoid any kind of queue at the Bali's international airport
(Find indonesian embassy in your country at: http://www.embassyworld.com)
This facility is available for nationals of the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the United States of America.
Citizens of these countries will be able to apply for a TV valid for either 3 or 30 days . (Price may be different depending of the indonesian embassy in each country). Passport with 6 months validity and return ticket must be showed, photo may be required.
VISA on Arrival (VoA)
If you can't have the tourist visa before departure you can have it upon arrival by air in Bali, Jakarta and a few other international airports or by ship at a limited number of Indonesian sea ports. A 3-day visa costs US$10 and a 30-day visa costs US$25
All tourist visas cannot be extended or converted into any other kind of visa. Also be aware that Immigration officials calculate the 30-day period as follows: your arrival day is counted as your first day, and you must leave the country on the 30th. day!
How to Obtain the "VISA on ARRIVAL" (VoA)
Travelers from the above countries must be in possession of a passport which is valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival and the completed embarkation/disembarkation card they received from their airline. They must also be able to prove they have sufficient funds for their stay in Indonesia.
Arriving travelers with Visa-On-Arrival status have to go first to one of the 'VoA Counters' to pay the appropriate fee and have their passports stamped with the VoA before proceeding to the Immigration Clearance Desk. An official bank is part of the VoA service counters. Payment of visa fees can only be made in US dollar bank notes, Indonesian Rupiah equivalent or by VISA or MASTERCARD.
I hope that answers your question.

you provide them with the document you have.
if you enter for work then you will need working visa.
if you enter just for holiday, then you don't need it. but you will need an address. where you will be staying. if you are staying in hotel then you need the hotel address.
bank account to proof that you will not have a problem financing your trip.
when arriving in Indonesia, if you have no friends picking you up, make sure take repected taxi (blue bird group or express taxi)
enjoy your stay:)
