What evolutional niche does it fill? Was God puffing on the magic dragon when he thought of this? Did he whack his holy breath and put life into it for a bet?

It was poker night and perhaps God and Saint Peter got a little carried away nipping in the Holy communion wine. God got it in his head that he was ready to "create" no matter how hard St. Peter tried to convince him to take his spot on the porcelain throne instead. But no...... God wanted to create a new mammal. He made the platypus and then ****** his head and thought, "Ok this guy is so ugly, he'll never get layed...... I KNOW... I'll make him like a chicken!" Soooooo he granted him the ability to lay eggs. By this time, Saint Peter is just beside himself. He starts shaking God trying to sober him up. He even steals Cupids arrows and starts pelting God with them. All of a sudden, one arrow misfired and went straight for God's head. Saint Peter yelled, "DUCK!" And...... well...... the rest is history.
Moral: Better to duck than get stuck with a bill.
