Blackmail is a crime. Blackmail is the illegal demand for money under a threat to do harm to a piece of property, a person, or a person's reputation. I don't think the maximum penalty for blackmail is life. According to The Theft Act 1968 (http://www.lawteacher.net/Criminal/Property%20Offences/TA%201968.pdf) Section 21,
it's 14 years.

Contrary to what everyone has said, this isn't such a stupid question. It is not illegal to tell someone about an affair, and it is not illegal to tell someone that you are going to tell their wife etc.

Now, is it illegal to "sell" e.g. photos which incriminate someone back to that person (and thereby prevent the affair getting out)? Probably not. Is it illegal to say "pay me £1,000 or I'll tell your wife?", it probably is.

Blackmail is not a straightforward criminal offence.

Yes it is illegal. The court will protect an individual by giving a name such as Mr X

Blackmail is illegal in every country of the world. It's one of those crimes which is equally unwelcome in every corner of the world, much like cold-blooded murder.

Yes it's illegal, the offence would be extorting money.
