My friend has a 250 Watt power supply and is wondering whether or not a Geforce 6800 which requires 350 watts.

Impossible right? Because that is what I am saying to him

You need more power than that. With some of the later GeForce cards, plugging in the extra power supply is an option, not a requirement. The GeForce 8600 will run without the extra power, but at a slower speed. You can run the card on slower setting with less power, but that defeats the reason for buying the faster card.

6800 is just a 38 watter, 6800GT a 55 watter and 6800 Ultra a 72 watter.

A 250W power supply with strong +12V rail (>10 amps) on a PC with just the basic devices might be able to run the 6800 but not the GT or the Ultra. BUT that 250W PSU could run HOT at full load and fail early.

A higher rated power supply would run cooler and last longer.
