Universal acceptance of gay people?

Wow. What planet are you from? And how do I move there?

I think it has. I have had somebody to tell me that I wasn't as gay because I wasn't openly out. Meaning that I didn't run go tell all the neighbors and everybody that I meet that I am gay. I don't know why everybody thinks that being out is synonymous with being happy. You can't be happy if you're not out attitude. It's bad enough that idiots want to spend time bashing gays, but now we are being bashed by other gay people. What kind of Bull**** is this? I tell you. Pretty soon Hollywood stars will be using it as way of making negative news go away. Leonardo DiCaprio in the midst of controversy over his non-green friendly mansions announced that he was gay. That ought to be good for twenty-four hours of headline news. (Well a guy can dream, can't he?)

One may choose to call it a cliche, but I believe it is an essential personal decision that is not so much about acceptance as it is about being able to breathe freely. As far as universal acceptance goes, it is too early to comment whether this really is the case. Even if one had universal acceptance, at one point in their life, people will have to reconcile with their sexuality. In times of universal acceptance, coming out will still remain that personal decision, albeit more for oneself than for the society.
