If having pasta, go for a vegetable sauce, instead of creamy or meaty sauces.
Go for fresh vegies/salad rather than chips as a side.
Go for grilled meats, rather than fried, crumbed, or in sauces.
Go with fruits for deserts, rather than cakes, or puddings.
Keep the number of courses to a minimum. Ask for small sized servings. Share a course.

Ask the waiter to take away the rolls. Ask for your food without butter or oil or mayo! Get Vinegar on the salad instead of dressing. Ask for a box with your food and pack half before you dig in. Drink water or unsweet tea. Marinara sauce can have a lot of oil added. Steamed veggies often come laden with butter, just say no! The portions are the main killer! Ask for a half order or child size.

These are all good tips. My favorite though is getting the dressing on the side (whatever kind you like), and dip your fork in the dressing and then the salad. You'll be surprised at how much dressing is leftover at the end of the salad. I can't stand drowning salads anymore by using this method.
