Like why do we have them? Is it a government thing? I hear them in a lot of popular songs, like a recent song called " party like a rock star " when you reverse the chorus, it saids solute the devil.

There was an experiment with movie goers done back in the 50s. On one frame of film words were etched like "I'm hungry, I want popcorn" and pictures of candy, etc, again on just one frame of the film. There is no way the concious mind can see it. Anyway, the sales at the concession stands increased dramatically.
Ever had the sudden urge to buy something when walking through a department store? That's because there are subliminal messages in the stores music telling you to buy something. They also implant messages in like, "I'm an honest citizen. I don't steal". We're being programmed all the time and don't even know it. I saw on the news a few years ago that some companies are putting subliminal messages on their employees computer screens with messages like, "I am a hard worker. I don't waste time".
A few years ago it was rumored that some Disney movies had some sexually suggestive messages in them. I did a little research and I'm convinced that there are!
There are messages in The Excorcist. Capt Cody's face was originally just flashed on the screen for only one frame. For the re-release it was shown for a longer period of time thanks to CGI. There is also the (subliminal) recording of a buzzing beehive throughout most of the movie. This was done to help disturb the viewer.
The Beatles implanted messages in their music with their 'Paul is dead' gimmick. A good example of what can go wrong would be Charles Manson and his family picking up on those messages, taking them serious and then acting out what they thought they meant.

They must be very subtle and I hear them without knowing or I do not hear them at all! I suppose that is what subliminal means.

Repetitive messages are the thing. If they repeat over and over again that Magners cider is good, some people will believe it. It still makes me burp and I don't like it!

Its Christian propaganda. These 'messages' dont effect you. Some artists put them in for fun, others just coincidentally sound like they are saying something (music)

one of the most famous cases were when two Judas Priest fans commited suicide while listening to their awsome album: Stained Class. In the song "Beyond the realms of death" when the last verse is put in reverse, it says "I took my life" --> quite clearly. In another song "Better by you better than me", Supposedly you can hear "Do it" when reversed.. I say its a load of crap, the band went to court and were found innocent. Anyways.. Another example that is clearly a coincidence.. listen to another one bites the dust (Queen) backwards.. the chorus is: Its fun to smoke marijuana.. And Led Zeppelins Stairway to heaven.. Check it out on this website.. http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/stairway.php -- its amazing
