Why are some big Hollywood movies released in other countries before the US? Transformers, for example was released in Australia almost a week before the US release date

I agree with Mei. For example, Terminator 3, Fantastic 4 part 2 and many other movies inculding Pirates of the Carebbean 3 were all released first in Bahrain. Movies in Bahrain are usually released on Wednesday (even before Australia). Bahrain Cinema Company pays a lot of money to bring the movie to Bahrain before the neighboring countries such as Dubai & Kuwait. I give them the credit for that ;)

Hollywood Movies To Be Released

The normal release date is on thursday here, in Australia. It's Friday in the United States. That does not constitute a week, even though it's Saturday in Australia when Friday falls in the USA.

I'm in Australia and it's very rare that movies are released here early. In fact, three days ago Blades of Glory was just released. The latest James Bond movie wasn't released until late December here, when it was released in US on Nov. 17.

Worldwide releases are incredibly rare, most of the time the movie is out on DVD in the USA before it's at movie theaters in Australia. Australia releases new shows to the cinema on Thursdays, to keep with a worldwide release date, obviously, they would have to release on Thursday, which would put it a day and a half before the US. If they didn't, it'd be like the US releasing new movies on Monday. Unfortunately those are set days. Rest assured, this all happens before we're several hours ahead of the USA timezone wise.

miss5mile wins. It's to try to get movies into markets where piracy is a problem: especially China where lots of pirated movies make it to Australia. The studios think that if an audience can see a movie in the theaters before the pirates have a chance to offer it on DVD, they'll be able to nip piracy in the bud a bit.

The movie studios want to know how well the movie is received in particular parts of the world and they are worried copy right infringements especially in the Chinese market
