Collins was not a great drummer, but a good drummer.
Ringo was a good drummer, but considered more of a "journeyman."

Phil Collins, imo, is the better drummer. Collins has said Ringo is the best time keeper.
Find some Brand X, a jazz fusion group that Collins was the drummer for. Morocan Roll, Livestock, Unorthodox Behavior are a few albums.
Of course you can check out early genesis. Head over to youtube

I don't think either is known for being a great drummer. But Phil was hired specifically for his drumming skills by Genesis in the late '60s. Their music back then was more complicated than any thing the Beatles did. Phil was probably a better drummer in his hay day than Ringo was.

This is a good question. Without doubt Collins is the better technical drummer, he should stick to the beat and is magnificent at it. Ringo is a basic 4/4 man but what a 4/4 man. Listen to Rain(paperback writer b-side) all of Revolver, he was so good his drums were mixed down! Sgt. Pepper. he takes a lot of ridicule but, in my opinion, he is Smeggin' great.......La.

I'm a huge Beatles fan. I love Ringo dearly. I also love Phil Collins work. But as somebody who also took drumming lessons... I can say that neither of them was technically spot on as drummers.
However that doesn't matter. Why?... Because each has a unique style of drumming that is almost a "signature". The band's end result would not be so unique if they drummed any "better" technically.

Wow, many people answering this are obviously not drummers. Ringo was a decent drummer at best. Phil is an exceptional drummer.

Not even close. Ringo rode the "Beatles" fame. He's like a trophy wife, all show and no substance. There's nothing original in his work and drums weren't even a prominant sound in the Beatles music.
