1. because the rest of your body is covered with pads and you can only feel a hit on your legs, and helmet. and touching a dudes arm is weird.
2. because football is tiring and you needn't raise you hand too much
3. because they are knocking each other senseless, and worrying about gayness is not a top concern, it's more about survival and scoring a touchdown.

Football players are not the only sport to do that. Baseball dose it too it's just a way to congratulate each other like cheerleaders hug football slaps each others butts that just the way it is

To congratulate each others, usually you slap someone's back but football players wear shoulderpads and won't feel it.

It is the part one can be sure is not sore. If one playfully punches a shoulder and the guy just separated his shoulder, that would be bad.
With one exception in 72 years (Dolphin fans know what I'm talking about:)) the gluteous maximus is rarely injured.

I wonder why they do that too, it is kind of gay and wierd. All i know is that if someone did that to me at a game i would turn around and smack them in the face.
