Franklin D. Roosevelt - he was elected to four terms. He also led the country through some very tough times: he became president during the Great Depression and served until his death during World War II in 1945

Very few American presidents were popular during their administrations, including the man who is probably the most admired today: Abraham Lincoln.
The most respected and popular president in his day was George Washington. Teddy Roosevelt would be a distant second. Franklin Roosevelt, although he had many critics during his era, would be a possible third choice.

I would concur with the Washington supporters. He set the example for all to follow and was respected, and popular during his time.
Lincoln would be my next personnel choice, although deeply hated by half the population "enough to wage war" he stuck to his principals and saved the nation he was prepared to sacrfice on it's own principals that all men are created equal.
T. Roosevlt would be 3rd, his carisma tact and charm brought the US through a very difficult time.
T. Jefferson is well respected in the present.
FDR, my grandaparents voted for him several time. Was very popular but had a very shady side to him and was very close to our first dictator.
President in America tend to be more popular after they have passed on.

I would George Washington. He was the first president, he was unanimously chosen to be president, and he stepped down, on his own free will, after serving his terms to set an example for future leaders.

In his time, it was undoubtedly Washington. He was elected unanimously, which nobody else ever has been, and twice.
In history, it would be between Washington, Lincoln (who, during his life, was actually one of the least admired), or Franklin Roosevelt.
