I am looking to buy a new car, in the advert it states its been in a cat D accident but has been profecionally repaired. Could someone tell me what this means. Also will and how will it effect my insurence.

When a car gets to a certain age it's easy for it to be a write off. So it could have been in a relatively minor accident. As a result you could get yourself a proper bargain.

Presuming the car is a fair bit cheaper than a non-written off one you need to see proof from the seller as to what's been done. He may have receipt for a couple of panels, or like another person mentioned for a respray following paint damage.

If the car's not that cheap, or there's no actual proof of what the car was written off for then walk away.

Be aware though that if you do buy it, whoever buys it off you is likely to have the same concerns, so make sure it's cheap enough to make it worth your while.

And ignore the "ooh don't buy any Ford" muppets. They're probably 13! And don't actually have a car.

Cat D means it's been written off by the insurance company as the cost of repairs would be too much compared with the value of the car. It may have been something silly, like paintstripper was poured over the body and a full respray would have been too costly. It could also have been something more serious.
Although it may well have been properly repaired, you'll always have doubts and I'd steer clear unless you know what you're doing. It won't make any difference to insurance, but it will to any future buyers.

I would stay well clear of any car that been a bad accident and it will effect the resale value as well, I'm note sure how it would effect your insurance though. my advice is to look for another car.
