SIGN LANGUAGE, PICTURES, AND TONES.
Signs just like deaf people today as their vocal facultis werent as refined as today and established patterns of speaking werent perfect yet. Pictures that were easy for the smaller brain to understand easier, and tones were the beginnings of language development.
These tones were language but were very unrefined and so speaking with differing tones of importance came naturally.

This is just guess work so dont put this in an essay.
The pictures were definite as there is documented evidence.

No one knows for sure. Could have been sign language or even some rudimentary spoken language. They probably didn't write letters.

I saw in a documentary that some bone in the throat that makes speech possible was discovered at an archaeological dig and now it seems more likely that they could vocalize with specific sounds, but how large their vocabularies were cannot be known.
