i have a pretty ok cat, hes not old and is constantly outside. he stays in the house to sleep at day and eats in the house and occasionally comes home at night to sleep. I want to get either two doberman pinchers or miniture pinchers. Would they live together just fine if i got the dogs young or something? because i really want some dogs, but im just afraid that i would make the cat feel alienated and like i wouldnt pay attention to him(as you noticed, im very animal concious). Is it a good idea, or would it just bring many complications to the future?

It depends on the individual cat and the individual dog. To see if your cat is okay with dogs, try getting a friend who has a dog that lives with cats to bring their dog over (on a lead) and see how your cat reacts. The dogs are harder, but you could try to make sure they come from a home with cats. (But if they are younger, it's probably more the cat you would worry about, as you can mould the dogs into learning to live with cats :P). About whether your cat would feel left out, I think it should be okay, you will still pay attention to him (make sure you do, especially when you first bring the dogs home), and he sounds like he doesn't require that much attention anyway, because he is out the house most of the time.

That being said, if the puppies are overly active and want to play with the cat when he doesn't, it might cause some problems, but you can just separate them to give the cats a break. When I got one of my cats as a kitten I had a quiet dog, who was harrassed by the kitten. Now the kitten is a quiet cat, who is harrased by my mental puppy. If your puppy starts harrassing the cat, try to keep him entertained/tired out, that's about the only time my dog isn't chasing the cats :P. But all cats are the different, and when my puppy visits my dad, who has a cat who is less of a wuss, the cat is boss, and my dog wont go near him in fear of being stared at.

And on a less-related note, please get your doggies from a shelter and not a breeder :)

Only get one dog at a time. Two would overwhelm the cat. If the cat has never been around other animals before, you may want to look into getting her around a "trial" dog--a friend's dog or something like that--to see how he reacts. If he reacts really poorly (depression, violence, etc.), it would be best to not get a dog. If he reacts with a bit of fear or sadness or anger, but nothing extreme, you should be fine.

Get the dogs young because dogs do tend to be a bit more territorial as they get older, and they need to be able to adjust to having a cat around. Be sure to give the cat lots of extra TLC during the process so he knows he's not being forgotten!

I have had three cats and two dogs at the same time, but they were small dogs, so the cats were not intimidated. I suggest you stick with smaller dogs for the cats safety. Also, if you are animal conscious, why do you let your cat run outdoors? Inside is the best place for him. Get plenty of cat toys for exercise and they make beds that can be placed on a window so he can look out safely.

It all depends on if your cat is animal friendly what kind of cat do you have and i will check. Also It matters if the2 dogs are animal friendly and form my research Dobermans get along well with children, other dogs, and any household pets. Dobermans do not take kindly to unwanted visitors. And Minature Pinchers gets along fine with children, provided it is not pestered by them. Some have been known to be aggressive with other dogs and strangers, however this behavior is not common if proper socialization has taken place. Hope this helps.

The cat would be devastated. I have a cat the same age and he just hated it when I brought a dog home. He attacked him, and finally I had to find a new home for the dog. I think your cat might just run away if you bring the dogs. I'd just stick with the cat, if you love him.

Just get a puppy or two and slowly introduce them to your cat. Give your cat extra attention. As long as the cat can get away from the puppies for awhile when he needs to (most puppies bite) then he will probably do fine.

your cat will likely leave and become a stray, since it is allowed outside...cats are very territorial..... i had a cat around the same age, but entirely indoor, she hissed and chased the puppy i brought home, this went on for more than a year......my cat was mean to my puppy till finally one day the puppy stood up for herself, after that it became a tolerating relationship between them, now they are fine with each other...
the fact that yours is an indoor/outdoor cat is likely it will simply not stick around, but you will never know till it happens.... cats are really peculiar, they will like one other cat but hate another one, be friendly to one dog but you get the point....good luck..... get the puppies and do lots of extra things to help your cat adjust...who knows you may find they like each other....i give mine treats all the time.... sharing treat time for the both of my pets also helped to get the two of them to set aside their differences and learn to behave a bit... since they each got treats if one was getting treats the other knew her turn was next....i always give my cat the treats first...
