Feeling alone is a matter of choice, but feeling lonely and aloof is a condition which needs consideration. Even the most avid social people feel lonely at times in a gathering.Next time,do a bit of home work before hand to find the type of people likely to attend, the theme of the get together, identify common friends if any,try and join a sub group or two or three people and go with them ,dress appropriately and be ready to listen more than talking,be sure to cultivate one or two contacts and follow them up after wards to just say a hello or thanks.Remember, humans are social animals and as good animals we should be adept at socializing. You have it in you and can do it.So go ahead and accomplish it.Rreally very easy.

It's not really that you feel "alone" but "disconnected" from the otheres present. Having nothing in common, or not wanting to be there, the prescense of the other people doesn't have as much of an impact. It's a lack of interaction and stimulation.

It is in your state of mind. I have done the sameI thing. It is similar to when you isolate yourself from pain. You may be hiding from shyness or some unkown fear. Try just talking to one person at the event and soon you will mingle and forget about your own self and enjoy the other people
