Who said life was supposed to bring happiness all the time? There has never been one person to live on this Earth who has achieved 'true' happiness. Happiness is fleeting, and living a fulfilling life may bring those fleeting moments a little more. Life is about living. To live well, rather, now that is a key concept.
Living well to me means accepting my limitations and finding things that give my life meaning. When I make a positive difference in the world, I feel happy, but also, needed. Fulfillment is dynamic, and also involves feeling sad sometimes. When we love someone and we lose them (like a parent passing) -- we aren't just 'happy' , but we experience an array of emotions that equate to feeling (hopefully in those who are healthy) a feeling of gratitude. That is a humbling experience, and can be even more satisfying than 'happiness'.
I think a better term would be spiritual 'fulfillment', because the human mind experiences dynamic sensations and emotions that are more complex than one feeling. In that case, I think the key to fulfillment would be to love yourself and respect your body, mind and spirit. Care for your body diligently. Meditate and reflect on life frequently. Surround yourself in healthy behaviors and around those who also embrace this concept. Be in nature, do art, sing, enjoy music and the company of other people. Find somewhere you can be generative (I am a nurse, for example). Let go of earthly wants and feed your spirit by embracing love, and the concept of universalism. Live in the moment. Practice awareness and mindfullness. Practice the power of positive thinking. Be a part of a community. And always, always have an eye on how the creating force is involved in your life. Try to realize it's not 'your' way, but the way of the creator and if you find a healthy path to follow, your spirit will flourish!

I dont know if I'll get chosen as the best answer but for once, I will not be writing this answer to get 5 or 10 points but for myself.
The first thing I thought of when I read your question was that everyone should know happiness is not really a destination...it's a journey. As lame or as cliche as that might sound, it proves true. Many think that "hey, if I won one million dollars, I'd be happy", "hey, if I lost 10 lbs, I'd be happy", or even "hey, if I had such-and-such I'd be happy" but what happens when you dont reach that goal?
Let's face it - not everyone is cut out to be a millionaire. Not all of us can have an insane amount of money to splurge on anything and everything.
What Im trying to say is that we shouldnt sit around and wait for happiness to stop by and say hi. We should really be looking out for our happiness all the time. I genuinely believe that we are only happy if we're doing something we love. That's my own key to happiness. If you make sure you're always doing something you love, keeping yourself active, and giving back to the people around you will make you happy.
Of course, this is not an absolute statement. Happiness is wherever you find it.

I agree with the first answerer.
Find that what gives your life meaning. Do not look for answers from others, as what might be for them meaningful might not be for you.
So if you strive after what lives in your heart as a vision as something truly alive and when doing that take care not to hurt anybody in the process, I also believe you can get true spiritual happiness in life. What might also important on this path is to never give up, as succumbing to the obstacles is what makes many people depressed. So stay flexible and learn from the feeling of being stuck and being unhappy as these are sure signs that you need a different approach.
And in all your striving do not forget GOD as we need the spiritual power coming from GOD to fulfill a meaningful life.

Stay away from the material things in life and concentrate on the spiritual.First of all you must be satisfied with the simple Free things in life, like the beauty of nature, that we tend to over look in these chaotic times.Find a job that truly makes you happy and contented. It may not be the highest paid vocation, just the most satisfying for you.Remember"Money is the root of all evil".It will not bring you happiness.Savor your life, enjoy some free time just to have fun and do what you want!Stop rushing, rushing, rushing!!!Be a giver, the more you give to other people, like friendship and compassion, the more you will receive.Another one to remember"What goes around ,comes around".Don't expect too much from life,it is the simple things that count!!!!Relax and keep a sense of humor.YOU WILL BE HAPPY!!!!

Do some soul searching or look deep within yourself & decide what it is you like about who you are. Also you need to realize that if you keep an open-mind about everything that comes your way you won't have to take sides.....just stay in the middle or out of it completely. Next keep a positive attitude...know that everything happens for a reason....accept it & move forward. You do not need to understand why things happen just accept it. Stay positive....be positive...& positive energy will come to you. Next be content with whatever life brings. Remember you are a beautiful person from the inside out...& that Life is one of the biggest miracles that God has given us. Be true to yourself & to other's....If you can accomplish these small feat's in life than you will be rewarded.....Happiness comes to those who are humble.

There are many many words in english and in the other languages which convey different meanings to different people. Power , for example. religion ,, for eaxmple. Happiness is also one such. There cannot be one single definition and we have to accept it. Each one should try to understand in his/ her own way and try to reach it.
The long process of understanding happiness has been well defined. The so called " Not This" process. We try money . Not this. We try sex. Not this . .... Over a period of time we virtualy deny everything that is worldly as not giving lasting happiness. It is when we turn to spiritualism. Understanding ourselves. Once this is somewhat understood we can put ourselves on the path towards happiness. it is a long road.

Simple rules for a happy life:
1. live simple
2. free your heart from hatred
3. free your mind from worries
4. give more
5. expect less
Level of 'Happiness' varies from individual to individual. Some are just never satisfied with what they have, wanting more. While others are contended with the simple things they possessed, enjoying small little moments and they are very happy.
Never compare. Be grateful for what you already have, others are not so fortunate - health, the little money you have, friends, home etc.

I know it sounds like cliche but its true,TRUE happiness is in your state-of mind, heart and senses.I f you tell yourself today will be a happy day and I will enjoy and accept everything happily THEN I quarantee you will have a great day.I know many people will judge their happiness by success, good health, great personal/business relationships, family etc. but you know TRUE happinees will only arise from good relationship with YOUSELF.If you truly love and accept yourself you dont need anythingelse....,it sounds like a BUDDHA-kinda thing but its true. I had wealth, great looks, great job and still have my beautiful daughter but from meditation and having spend time spend on my own I KNOW what is really meaningful, also im almost 40 that helps aswell............TRY.

It would be nice to have spiritaul happiness but it would be also be nice if I don't have to worry about paying bills: Electric bills, water bills, tax, enrollment fees and other expenses in life. I'll be happy if I have a high paying job and fulfilling one too. I'm in a circumstance that makes me unhappy. I don't need to be a millionaire or famous movie star. As long I'm worry free, I'm happy,

HAPPINESS escapes many educated, wealthy, powerful, famous persons - Men & Women, Young & Old, physically Abled & Handicapped. I do not know your personal circumstance - nor the reason for your asking. But one thing I know - you are not alone in search for happiness. I invite you to visit my site (http://manilaman2.multiply.com) entitled - "My Lifetime Pursuit of Happiness".
As a Filipino Senior Citizen (at 63 yrs old) in my own search for happiness, I have come to conclude that HAPPINESS is (after all) having Peace-of-Mind and Tranquility-of-Heart. As human beings with unsatiable appetite for material needs and wants, our individual Human Spirit could be in true endless ecstacy - only IF our own personal welfare is connected and in harmony with the goodness of all of God's Creation.
Pray for wisdom - and wealth could be yours.
