Yup! If there was any way to keep from getting viruses they would do it. Safe mode is only a way of deactivating non essential hardware and software. It has nothing to do with how "safe" your computer is (Yeah I know the name is kinda misleading). It's basically a diagnostic mode.

Adding to the person above me:
You can run safe mode w/ network access, so yes you can connect to the internet and yes it is just as easy to get viruses

This depends if you are in Safe Mode OR
Safe Mode with Networking.

If you are on the net in Safe Mode at all, the danger is greater because no drivers or programs except system ones load. Therefore, no anti-virus, no anti-spyware, no firewall. Be careful. Only use the net in safe mode when you are at a site you are 100% sure is safe.

I only go on the security sites to do online scans and do download updates or software to scan my system.

It is better to run these types of programs in safe mode because of the same reason it makes it more dangerous to be on the net, because nothing extra (i.e. viruses in addition to non-system critical software) is loaded on boot.

Good luck.

it could not hit upon greater viruses/spy ware, however the explanation why human beings bypass to secure mode whilst they are working anti-virus/spy ware utility is: some virus/spy ware documents won't be deleted whilst in wide-spread mode. In secure mode, your domicile windows has minimum methods/purposes working so which you will delete documents which could be occupied via a technique (so as that this is prevented from deletion) in any different case.
