I just got a new memory for my computer. After i put it in, my computer keeps randomly restarting. Does anyone know the reason why? Do i need to change something in BIOS? I had 500 mb of memory and got a 1 gb more. Also, i have windows XP if it makes any difference. Thanks for your help

There are two reasons and three solutions that I can give you. First, the case latency of the new chip needs to match the 500mb that you already have. If I am to assume you know this, then lets go to the next solution.

Since you know how to install the RAM chip, you know your computer has to be off and the power source disconnected. Do this and access and remove the battery from your motherboard. Be careful not to break the pins that hold the battery in place. The battery is slightly less than the size of a quarter. Then plug in your computer and try to start it up. It won't boot, at this point because the battery is not there. Turn it off or disconnect the power, then connect the power again and turn it on again (without the battery) for a second time (it still will not boot). Turn it off and disconnect the power source (unplug it) once again.

This will reset the BIOS without you having to manually do it. Then when no power is on the system, put the battery back in. Reconnect the power and turn on the computer. It should boot up this time.

If this doesn't work, then the new 1 gig RAM chip is not the same as the 500 that you had previously. If this is the case, turn off the system and unplug it again. Remove the 500 mg chip, move the 1 gig chip it to where the 500 mg chip was in, (chips should be in the bay closest to the motherboard components) and plug in your power source and turn the computer on. It should recognize the new chip as the only one and should work.

If it does and you want more memory, sell the 500 chip on eBay and get another 1gig chip that is exactly like the one you just got and place it next to the existing one. Turn on the unit and it should work and recognize you now have 2 gigs of memory. Removing the battery will always reset your BIOS. It will not lose any information such as your operating system or files.

Note: Never open your computer without the power source unplugged and do not wear jewelry when working on it (due to static electricity). Always wait about a minute when you disconnect the power as some electricity still remains for a few seconds. Take your time and if you have any questions, you may email me.

If you're using Windows 95, 98, or ME:

Sure, memory is pretty cheap these days, but jamming your system to the gills with memory isn't necessarily the path to optimum performance. In fact, Windows Me and Windows 98 aren't designed to handle more than 1GB of RAM (and Win98 even has problems with that much). Uninstall some of that memory to avoid the constant rebooting. In fact, leave just 512MB and you'll see excellent performance.

If you're using Windows XP or Vista:

You might have bad memory or need to update the BIOS on your motherboard.

In this case, uninstall the new memory and go to your motherboard manufacturer's website and look for a BIOS update for your specific motherboard. *Make sure it is your specific motherboard* or you risk not being able to boot your computer after a bad BIOS flash.

Update the BIOS using the instructions they will likely provide you. Email me if you have any further questions or issues, I'd be happy to help you resolve them!

Good luck!

Sounds like your two sticks are not compatible. Try installing the new 1 gig card by it's self. Be sure to install it in the primary or 0 ram slot.

Are you sure you purchased the correct type of memory for your motherboard. Did you also check your motherboards spec's to make sure you can use 1gig chip. It may not support that.
