Although not the only way to look at this topic, one way would be to consider that one reason we seem to be obsessed with physical perfection is because we suddenly have so many tools to achieve what we believe to be physical perfection. Historically, you had to be content with the looks God gave you. Today, you can get plastic surgery, eat better, exercise more efficiently, etc. Add to this the fact that "marketing" of beauty has made us believe you need to be your most beautiful in order to be truly happy. Even what we consider "perfect" is only a product of our current age. Prior to the 1960's and the "Twiggy" phenomenon, small breasted women with low body fat and narrow hips were considered "sickly" and not very good for child bearing. Men can get by thinking that their sex appeal is a function of their wallet size, but women are put in an almost impossible situation having to compete with air-brushed models who starve themselves by eating toilet paper and working out for a couple hours every day. Also, we have the "time" to be obsessed; the introduction of "labor saving devices" has freed us to have more time trying to find Mr./Ms. Perfect. We idolize those who have no personality but lots of money and looks, instead of those who contribute most to society, so of course we try to "be like them." Everyone wants to be "sexy", but don't realize how shallow "sex" is when compared to "love". Making physical beauty the goal ignores what our true goal should be: Happiness and Contentment, neither of which will ever be obtained if our goal is "perfection". We live in a culture that promotes "number-oneism". If you aren't the best, you're a failure or just lazy. There is nothing wrong with looking your best, but that's a far cry from looking "perfect." We'd be wiser to be perfectly happy with how we look, than to be unhappy we don't look perfect.

yes, the world is obsessed with looking perfect. Everyone wants the best stuff. You should tell them to be themselves. If you don't like fashion don't pretend to like it just because everyone else is. It doesn't really matter what you wear, all that matters is your attitude.
