I've watched the guitar duel http://youtube.com/watch?v=idb2dUtTpuU several times, is Ralph actually playing his part? Can anyone provide me with a link that proves one way or the other? Thanks.

The scenes that show a close up of his hands don't show the face of the player. The scenes that show hands and face are too far away to tell for sure. He has the right moves if nothing else!

Funny, Justin. Did you know Joe Seneca was Ralph's stunt double in Karate Kid?

Steve Vai plays both parts, but Ralph did a very good job faking the scenes where you can see that it's him "playing." Wikipedia probably has an entry explaining it, as would IMDB.
EDIT
The climax cutting head scene has been widely popularized on the internet by fans of Steve Vai. [1] Most of the battle is played by Vai, except for Eugene's blues parts at the beginning of the duel which are played by Ry Cooder and can be heard on Vai's album "The Elusive Light and Sound, volume 1 "
Macchio's fingering on the guitar was a studied acting job in itself because he didn't know how to play guitar prior to taking on the part of a guitarist. He received intensive training from classical guitarist William Kanengiser of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet to approximate playing realistically enough to hide that fact respectably well.

Yep, muffinman got it exactly right! Macchio did a great job faking the guitar parts for the movie. It fools almost any non guitarist and beginner guitarist I've ever talked with about the movie.

Incidentally, part of the "Eugene's Trick Back" section, (the classical sounding solo Ralph plays that ultimately defeats Jack Butler), is from an Etude by Paganini, "Caprice no. 5 in A min" for solo violin. Check it out here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=NZmc0fKfgWs

An interview with Guitar World confirms that Steve Vai played all the guitar parts.
