fear of rejection

I think it's because we are so afraid to show our vulnerable side to people. It seems that people are more protective of themselves and their emotions in this day and time for fear of being taken advantage of. It's hard to find people you can really feel comfortable being your true self around and trust with our true feelings.

Because they are afraid of being hurt. If I expose my true feelings then in essence who I am is subject to rejection, ridicule, etc. In general, I think it is a defense mechanism. Trust is hard to build and easy to lose. Losing trust over and over again makes it very difficult to trult trust anyone.
