It would help to know how old you are.
We have more theater seats per capita than any city in the United States other than New York.
We have a profesional football, basketball, baseball, and soccer team. Most of them with very new stadiums.
We have some of the best restaurants you can find.
We have many landmarks including the Battleship of Texas, the Galveston historical district, and the San Jacinto monument within an hour or two of Houston.
We have at least twenty malls. We have tons of movie theaters.
Memorial Park and Downtown Houston offer places to jog, walk, scate, rollerblade, bike, and hike.
The Arboretum near Memorial Park, or the Mercer Arboretum near Spring offer miles of forest trails.
There is Brenham with the creamery about an hour outside of houston. Brenham also has tons of nice shops and restaurants.
There is a miniature horse ranch that you can visit near Hockley, Texas.
There are several lakes and rivers within an hour of just about any part of Houston. Boating, jetskiing, swimming, rafting, tubing, and kyacking are all right here.
You can rent and ride horses, dirt bikes, and ATVs.
The Houston Zoo and Museums are awesome and relatively inexpensive - especially if you buy a membership and use it more than a few times.
Pretty much anything there is to do is here in Houston, or close to it. We don't have a lot of scenic activities and we try to concentrate on the indoor activities, but there are tons of them.
Schlitterbahn, Moody Gardens, and Splash Town are also good choices.
Hope that gets you started!

These are some things I've found about Houston either via research or in my personal experience in Houston and with Houstonians:
•Friendly for a large metropolitan area
•Relatively nice, mild winters
•Close to beaches and festivities as such (Galveston’s west beach is clean; Kemah is a nice bayfront community)
•Thriving job market
•Houston Museum District
oContemporary Arts Center
oThe Health Museum
oByzantine Fresco Chapel Museum
oHolocaust Museum Houston
oHouston Center for Photography
oHouston Museum of Natural Science
oHouston Zoo
oLawndale Art Center
oThe Menil Collection
oMuseum of Fine Arts, Houston
oRienzi
oRothko Chapel
oThe Weather Museum
•1940 Air Terminal Museum
•Houston Theater District
oAlley Theatre
oBayou Bend
oBayou Place
oBroadway Across America
oComedy Sportz
oDa Camera of Houston
oHouston Symphony
oLandmark River Oaks Theatre
oMercury Baroque
•Armond Bayou Nature Center
•Art Car Museum
•The Aurora Picture Show
•Battleship Texas
•Beer Can House
•Buffalo Bayou and Park
•Buffalo Soldiers National Museum
•Downtown Aquarium
•Driv-Motoring
•The Galleria
•George Ranch
•Greater Houston Soaring Association
•Gulf Greyhound Park
•Highland Village
•Houston Astros
•Houston Texans
•Houston Rockets
•JPMorgan Chase Tower (60th floor observation deck)
•Katy Mills
•Kemah Boardwalk
•Lone Star Flight Museum
•Lower Westheimer District
•Moody Gardens
•Rice Village
•River Oaks
•San Jacinto Monument and Museum
•Schlitterbahn Galveston
•Seawolf Park, Galveston
•Space Center Houston
•Texas Medical Center
•The Woodlands
•Traders Village
•Uptown Park
•Montrose
•West University Park
•Bellaire
•Midtown
•Neartown
•Generally, job pay is better considering the higher standard in quality of life and slightly cheaper cost of living.
•Memorial Park
•Hermann Park
•Thriving nightlife
•Central location from San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, South Padre Island, and New Orleans.
•Reasonably-priced housing
•Light rail situation is improving
These are just the positive contributors that make Houston the successful city it is. Is it any wonder that 5.3 million people live in the metro? Focus on the negatives secondarily, but while you're there, try to make the very most of it. You'll be unhappy if you say that you didn't. I live in Kentucky and I'm VERY unhappy here; in fact, I'm considering a move to Houston or at least somewhere in Texas. However, at least I can say that I've really been active in the community and tried to make a go of it here in KY.

yeah it is...but there are some things to do that are not just the typical go to NASA or Galveston or go to the Theater District
Walter's on Washington - live music metal and psychobilly
http://www.4215washington.com/.
Fitzgerald's - live music of all kinds, 30 years of blues to punk to ska to whatever.
Also look for the Engine Room, the Continental Club, the Merridian & Warehouse Live for other great live music
We have a huge hip hop scene see http://www.houstonhiphop.com
For comedy go to
The Laff Stop http://www.laffspot.com/
For really great new theater look at:
http://www.infernalbridegroom.org/home.html
For films go to the River Oaks Theater (while its still here)
or
the Aurora Picture Show - alternative indie film
http://www.aurorapictureshow.org/
We have the Menil Collection & the Contemporary Art Museum - both cool
Also look at THE ORANGE SHOW and LAWNDALE ARTS for alternative art to the traditional museums
For skateparks (prior to the big one being built) look at:
http://www.houstontx.gov/parks/SkateParks.html
For "moutain biking" there is the Ho Chi Min Trail in Memorial Park...ask any local bike store where it is exactly
Great sources of information for non-traditional entertainment can be found by visiting the web site of and listenting to KPFT 90.1 Pacifica Radio
of course there are several good coffee bars in town, Brazil has good jazz some nights
There are a ton of dance clubs all over the city for any kind of taste. You can find a million and half places to two-step and listen to watered down country music and drink flat Bud Light, if that's you thing. Or go to one of our countless topless bars.
Other than that compared to LA, NYC etc. Houston does not have a great amount of places to walk around eat, hang out etc. But I have found that as far as it goes Houston is a pretty easy place to find something to do if you have a car.

BG - Here's a tiny list of where to start. Consider the activities that you find interesting and then build your activities around them.
Be sure to visit NASA (call to see where they are offering money off coupons)--they have new activities every season, the Houston Zoo and all of the museums (the Children's Museum on Binz in the Museum District is a fantastic place for kids and admission is only $5 each and you can take lunch to eat there in their park or the snack bar is not expensive). Both Nasa and the Children's Museum are all day excursions. Visit Galveston. Once there go to the Strand, the Bishop's Place, Sea Wolf Park on Pelican Island, take the ferry over to the Bolivar Peninsular and go to Crystal Beach about 1/2 mile down on the right. Go to Schlitterbahn, a huge water park in Galveston, visit the museums there. Get on line before the dates of your vacation to see what else you would like to do here. There is sooooooo much to do in Houston. Try these sites:
NASA http://www.spacecenter.org/
The Children's Museum
http://www.cmhouston.org/
City Vistor Site
http://www.visithoustontexas.com/visitor...
(There is a section with 34 things to do that cost $2 or less each---a great value for a family, a group, or people on a buget).
The Houston Chronicle Newspaper Website
http://www.chron.com/
Check this website on Thursdays (under Entertainment) to see what is up and coming for the weekend.
Also, for a more liberal entertainment newspaper (but it has good restaurant reviews) see,
http://www.houstonpress.com/
For the water park:
http://www.schlitterbahn.com/
Also, try:
http://houston.citysearch.com/?brand=smx...
and, for coupons and hotel packages, try:
http://www.visithoustontexas.com/..........
Also, don't miss a visit to the largest church in the United States:
http://www.lakewood.cc/site/pageserver?p...
People from all denominations enjoy this church. Services on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays!
God bless you and have a wonderful time in our great city!

Why not take a short trip to Galveston? There's a nice beach, a brand-new water park, and a beautiful old city to explore.
Better yet, why not explore Houston a little more carefully? Granted, it's sort of like Los Angeles with extra humidity, but you are talking about the nation's fourth largest city.

The Kemah Boardwalk is really fun in the summer. They have live bands and lots of restaurants. They even have a small gaming area and a place where you can pet stingrays. There are alot of fun places to hang out in the Clear Lake area, especially if you like the water. And when baseball season starts back up, you have to go to the Astros games. Also, have you ever been to an Aero's game? It is fun, especially if you sit up close to the rink. As far as bars and clubs, nothing beats the downtown area.

If you can't find something to do in the fourth largest city in the US - then your need to PUT DOWN THE BONG and get off the freakin' sofa, MAN!!!
Oh yes - and listen to everything GM (previous answer) tells you about what to do in Houston - that man has Houston down! He did, however, leave out La Carafe downtown. Very cool bar everyone must see once!
