Could having an extremely heavy period for 4 days so far (when I have never had it this bad) and constipation be related ? They both started the same day

It might be related, I've experienced the same.
You might be losing too much nutrients from the blood loss. Try drinking lots of water and take vitamins. I usually take iron, vitamin c (or some good ol' orange juice :) and calseum during my period and it helps with the heaviness and cramps.

Hormone changes during your period can cause both constipation or diarrhea.
Drink lots of water.
