don't worry about removing the root ball unless you are going to build something over it. One way of removing it over time is to cover it with soil and eventually it will rot and decompose. Plant something over the top and you won't notice the roots.

I've done this many times and when I return to that spot months later I can easily dig up any roots that haven't completely rotted.

You can uncover the roots and chop them off below ground level one at a time. It will take much more time than an hour. Some trees have a "tap root" under the spreading roots that is almost as large as the trunk and will grow straight down. You will have to chop enough of the spreader roots out to get to that tap root. I have removed many stumps this way using a shovel, axe and pick. It is a lot of work but if you don't have a machine.....As mentioned before, most trees will not send sprouts from the root sections you leave behind.

Hard to say unless you know what kind of tree it is. If you have the base of the trunk and the large supporting roots out you probably got it all. Most trees will not resprout once cut down. Some do, and then you have to dig out that little bit left.

Roots are like branches in that they get smaller as they go out. After a little there is nothing to find.

To dissolve a stump use AMMONIA not bleach. The ammonia feeds the decomposing bacteria and other microbes that digest the wood and turn it into nice soil.

We had a tree taken down two years ago and the gentleman said that for the tree trunk, he poured a gallon of bleach on the trunk left in the ground and on the roots around it.
He said it may take up to 6 months, but the roots will soften up and turn yellowish/white.
.(do this with no kids or animals around) and when you don't expect rain for at least a few days....IT did take about 41/2 months and my husband just used a pick ax on the thing to break it all up and haul it away.
Good luck...............Hope this helps you.

if you are talking the end of the tree trunk and get rid of all the tree. you might not be able to unless you get a machine and dig it out. if the tree was 6 foot and over that trunk could be very large. trees roots grow down and out. i have a feeling you may need a machine to dig it out. good luck

If you're so worried about it hire a stump grinder to get rid of the stump. otherwise, leave it alone and it will deteriorate over time.
if it's only "2 fists lengths around" it shouldn't take too long to deteriorate.
