All computers have all of the protection on them when you purchase them provided you have Windows 2000, XP and so on. Most Internet servers give Internet protection to you with there start up disks. What you really need in addition to the Internet protection given you by SBC or AT&T or AOL and the others is Firewall protection. You can download it on line or from Wal-mart or any other store that sales computer programs. If you don't know how to install it Radio Shack, Office Depot, Staples or most computer places will do it for you at a price of course. Another company that has it all is ZoneAlarm Service Agent (on line).

make sure to not visit bad website online whenever possible for starters. emails, make sure you know who the sender is and how safe a link is before clicking on it. dont use internet explorer or outlook express, they are both far less secure than say firefox and thunderbird (the mozilla email client). in firefox you can download a number of add-ins that help u stay safe. McAfee site advisor is one, when you search in google or yahoo, it puts a green check next to safe websites, a red one next to unsafe. that way you know easily what to avoid. so thats just in general user behavior. in terms of software, get a good anti-virus program, Symantec and related products are popular and good, although some people find them annoying. Avast is a good program, free i think. McAfee also has anti-virus software. also download Adaware 2007 (available on www.download.com) and Spybot S&D. make sure you keep your windows firewall up and running at all times, and run Adaware and Spybot once a week if you use the internet heavily, every other week for any other amount of internet use. other than that, just be smart. dont go downloading random free software because its probably bundled with tons of spyware.

Here's what I install on all computer of my own and friends and family that I "support".

http://free.grisoft.com - AVG Anti-Virus, AVG Anti-Spyware and AVG Anti-Rootkit (ALL 3)

http://www.download.com - Spybot S&D, Adaware

I never have any problems and I run them once a week. Make sure you do the updates to the virus definitions before each scan and use Spybot's Immunize feature

Oh yeah, they are all free.

You can also try to use ZoneAlarm as a firewall. i've heard a lot of success stories with it but I wasnt really impressed. My router kind of handles that stuff for me.

I have used Norton's Anti-virus for years and have never had a virus get thru.

If you decide to go with Norton, just get their Norton System Works. It gives you Anti-virus plus repair programs to repair you programs and/or drives.

I believe in it. It catches things others miss. Pops

You should have a firewall and antivirus software. If you want to go with free software you can go to www.download.com and look around.

I would also recommend having Spyblaster on your computer along with Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware 2007. Spyblaster helps keep spyware from ever attacking your computer and Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware 2007 remove spyware.

AVG Free Edition for antivirus protection
Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition [free] (will have to update it and run scan manually) works good
Make sure Windows Firewall is turned on...No one really needs anymore protection unless they have very sensitive information.

I currently use the free version of AVG, and it works for me. There is a "premium" (read you gotta pay for it) version, but I simply don't have the money to get it. If I could, I woud.
